I'm going to college!
Reefgirl (Brunel Baby) Posted Nov 24, 2004
I'd rather risk the autism, which Alex has anyway, than the aftereffects of Measles and Mumps

Alex is autistic? Must be tough.
Today all the other students get a swot vac, so it's just first years for a week!

It's not autism as such, it's technical name is Semantic Pragmatic Disorder, it's a mild form of Autism, she's taught at school as if she had it and she's doing really well

What's a swot vac? If it's something I should know, blame it on the fact that I was up until 3 AM last night...

We had something called Study Week when I was at school, you were supposed to use the week to revise for your exam's, Yeah Right!! of course we did, we watched TV or went shopping

Ah yes...Teachers will believe anything. We had study weeks too, only really did any study when school would have been finished anyway. In secondary, our vice principal insisted we refer to free classes as 'study periods,' despite the fact that you do absolutely nothing in them.
Swot vac is short for Swot Vacation, it's a week off right before exams. I first came across the term in an Australian booklet my physics professor reccomended to teach us about studying science. The werid thing was that it talked about the difficulty in going from continuous assessment to everything riding on one test, when in Ireland we do the exact opposite.

Today we had a biology exam on just what we had done in the labs. It was multiple choice, but surprisingly hard, particularly when some answers seem equally suitable. I'm pretty sure I got the definition of calyx wrong, yet had it right before I changed it...
After that, there was an optional physics exam. Not MCQ, but easy, and a pleasant surprise after the bio.

Some good news and some bad news today.
Bad news - I had a maths exam which I thought was going to be on tomorrow, so I didn't get a chance to do any study at all except a little bit five seconds before it began.
Good news - I got a letter to the editor printed in the Irish Times. Something like that can really put a spring in your step.

Just had a calculus test, easy as pi.
Now we are finished for this semester, don't know whether I might go to a club or something.

Calculus
I'm almost done with mine- I need a C to pass the class, and an A for a B, so I'm living and breathing multivariable calculus until Monday.
If I never see another vector again without getting paid for it, it'll be too soon!

Fortunately (?) I have yet to see multivariate stuff, though I have seen vectors in algebra, and yes, they are EVIL!!!!!
Since today is Monday, how did you do?

Scandrea Posted Dec 13, 2004
Meh.
I kind of hoped some of the guerilla math that I pulled on there helped a little bit.

There there, at least you did try everything.
A few posts ago, you said I'd be surprised how many Ned Flanderses there are. Would I also be surprised how many Homer Simpsons there are?

More than likely.
Hey, so you know, I brought you back through the Stargate! We need you to move the story along!

Ah...right...
I've been away from the broadband-equipped college computers for a while since getting the hols, and so have had to neglect my RPGs as I'm stuck with dialup. What have I missed?

Not much- Reef's still being tortured on Bubastis, we know where she is, we just have to get there.
