Some of you may recall that back in April 2004 I was promoted, well at the time I was told that because the company had been taken over recently, salary reviews would have to wait 6 months. 6 months later and its 'Sorry, my manager won't free up the money, but I'll make it up to you in April.'

I'm sure it will come as no surprise to anyone that come April - there's still no money forthcoming. So I've instituted the company grievance procedure.

At the meeting the personnel girl trots out the company line - "Promotion dosn't always mean salary increase - if it WAS a promotion." So putting me in charge of 2 departments instead of 1 isn't a promotion ? Try telling that to someone who lives in the real world.

Anyway, no surprise they've turned down my grievance, so I've rejected the hearing and asked for it to be moved onto the next level. Of course, I'd be better positioned if the 3 people who were promoted with me had reacted in the same manner. However after screaming about how they won't let them get away with it, they've all kissed the managerial bottom, and rolled over.

So, which way will it go ? Troublemaker - knife him ! or Individual Thinker - promote him !

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Man, I hate it when that sort of thing happens. Your fellow workers whine and bitch about something and then let it continue to happen, making you look like a heel when you actually *do* do something. It's happening to me right now at work.

*Wanders off looking for a coastguard and muttering about bloody spineless hypocrites*

Is it too mean to hope if you get the pay rise that they don't benefit too?

Just for added interest, my7 peers keep asking me how my grievance is going. This despite my answering their every question with - "have you started yours yet ?"

several years ago i received a promotion, from quality technician to project manager. it was a quantum leap, and my salary, which was generous for my former post, was only about half that of the other project managers. When i accepted, i thought it was understood between my old and new bosses and myself that a pay realignment would be forthcomin, and i would not have taken on the responsability (and hours) without that enticement. I got nothing.

i also lost the position about a year later, and was given my present job. to be honest, it had been a case of too much, too fast, and looking back i couldn't be happier about the way everything has turned out.

to get back to the pay issue, the salary system in my company, and in france more generally, is based on a grid which indicates a salary range for each level. it does not allow for large leaps, but does guarantee gradual individual salary increases, based on merit, on a wider scale, to the tune of 2% of salary mass every year, over and above across the board rises.

smiley - wow Apparently my digs have found a target. One of my fellow team leaders has dragged the union rep in with him to support his claim. This could be good. Unfortunately his union is TESSA, still at least there's someone least who won't just roll over and play dead.

One good point could be that his Ts&Cs include a rider that any promotion will incur a salary premium of at least 5%. (Mind you he also gets free rail travel, and has a protected pension.)

I've just got my new terms under the NHS 'Agenda for change'. My salary has gone down but London weighting up, so overall a slight rise. Somehow I get the feeling that because of back dating, marking time until everybody catches up,hours extended, in real terms I'll be slightly worse off smiley - doh. The only bonus is that now I'm employed instead of locum, so I get holiday & sick pay smiley - ok

How are you getting on Mackay?

Well the meeting Thursday was at least conducted in the real world.

Boss man tells me he cannot see increasing my staff is a promotion issue when they only went up by 2. However he agrees that I have a lot more responsibility since the network team have been added to my team.

I tell him that the company tell us that if we want more money we should take on more responsibility or learn new skills - I say I've done both, ipso facso I deserve more money. Furthermore I tell him that I have succeeded in the new role, whilst other people have had problems. smiley - biggrin

He agrees that is a reasonable view. smiley - yikes and says he can understand how I feel.

He then talks to me a bit about how he sees my team expanding further and I ask him how big it has to be before he agrees I've been promoted.

As I'm sitting with the last personnel girl's boss, I also take the opportunity to say I don't think she's up to the job - noticably her boss doesn't defend her.

Teasswill - I thought you lived in Yorkshire ? Dunno why I thought this. smiley - huh

Frankly - I think they're jiving me too, but you gotta play the game if you wanna win, and you've got to be seen to be pushy too. Next time they may think twice about stiffing me.

However it seems something is happening - they are unable to rely to me within the scheduled time limit because the matter has been referred to senior management.

smiley - musicalnote Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today - but if you ask them raise, it comes as no suprise they ain't givin' none away. smiley - musicalnotesmiley - biggrin

Yep - something is happening - the manager I had the meeting with is no longer my manager - however before being pushed off he found time to say he's rejecting the claim.

Onwards and upwards.
