...all this Hitchhiker's fuss has allowed me to find out my own ultimate truth! 
[which isn't 42, unfortunately]

'The lift with a mind of its own came from a time when Douglas was working as a bodyguard for a family staying in a Hotel. The lift played muzak ceaselessly. "The trick," Douglas later explained, "was to stay sane."'

Well, now I know.
