It could be a nice person, but he or she is still going to be poking around inside your mouth with sharp objects and rubber gloves

I thought it would be something like that. 
I never minded going to the dentist, its doctors I don't like. You go in in pain and come out again in agony.

In the uk Doctors/ General Practitioners, don't do surgery. That is left to Surgeons and in the case of teeth Dental Surgeons.

but surgeons are doctors too. they are specialist doctors
like GP studied to be GP
a dentist is specialized doctor in dental parts

Yes indeed.
I may be wrong, but I don't think that a dentist has any 'normal' doctor training, I understood that they pretty much only dealt with the mouth.
Could be wrong though.
I could always ask the cute dental nurse.

I think dentist is trained basic like every doctor, but get specialist training. the universaty hospital I go has dentist department.

The hospital I worked had a "jaw-surgery" wich is basicly the same thing.

I presume that dentist is a different qualification since all the dentist I have seen have been known as 'Mr' or 'Mrs' or 'Ms' rather than Dr. Presumably therefore, they are not Doctors as in a GP. Certainly there are specialist dental colleges and so forth. In fact, when I needed some expensive dental treatment one option was to have it done at the dental college where they teach the students
