Can I suggest looking at Whoami?s page at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/u177581 if you get stuck. I stumbled accross it when I clicked on his name on an article from the Infinite Improbability drive on the main page. It has lists of ACEs and Gurus to help out, although I suppose you could just ask Whoami?. I haven't posted there, but I just thought it was a useful page...

Well, about the smilies, just click on one of the smilies in a conversation (not on a userpage or article) and it'll take you to the smilies page 
A good way to see interesting pages and meet interesting people is to click them from some other entry/conversation, or just look who's online and click on someone who is online
