I will never understand why those seven schools chose to associate themselves under the image of an non-flowering invasive vine.

I think your comment is self explanatory:

"non-flowering" = no good truly comes from them

"invasive vine" = they seem to make their way into every stage of the college selection process, whether you're using the Princeton Review to do research, or trying to explain that the school you got a scholarship from is Hart Ford, not Har Vard

(Disclaimer: I have nothing against non-flowering plants, they have taken over the first floor of my house and I think they're lovely. However a flower blooming is often associated with beauty, maturity, coming into one's own, etc. - and I am merely commenting that these schools lack such things.)

Let's not blame the poor ivy plant for
mucking up the U.S. college system.
Ivy just grows where conditions are right
for it. Put up a multi-story brick or
stone building (college administration
building, dorm, whatever), and ivy will be
happy to climb it. I've seen ivy flourishing
on buildings at non-ivy-league schools. smiley - smiley

Anyway, I don't have anything against schools
like Yale. I did apply for admission there
in 1966. They were not interested in having
me attend. My parents were relieved, because
they didn't have the money to send me there
anyway. Plus, my brother was going to need
college money too, six years down the road. smiley - sadface

Okay, we now come the obscure painting
known as "Third of June." Observe the
ivy plant that is trying to climb Paul H.....
Observe the shipwreck in the background,
that represents a ruined life because of
inability to get into a top-notch school.
See how the butterflies flit aimlessly in
the sky above. They represent aimless and
unfoccused activity caused by too much
time spent on H2G2. smiley - online2long

Juxtaposed we see "The Sixth of June." Here we can almost feel the anxiety as young girls await the opening of the exit-gates of Hell. Richie Valens, ensnarled in an ivy vine, sings a cleaned up version of a French song about running for President. Over head, a botanist ingests a dictionary through osmosis. In the distance, we see the glorious campus of Drew University rendered in the colors of hootoo.

Poor Richie Valens.
It's tragic to see a life cut tragically short
like that. Buddy Holly was a sad loss, too. smiley - sadface

priceless, positively priceless
except that it's the 8th, not the 6th
please don't come to my graduation party two days early, unless you plan to help keep mother sane
then you'll be waiting for the exit-gates of hell to open, too

Oh, come now.
Surely that school wasn't really
like hell. smiley - smiley

ah, it had its ups and downs
everything does, really
and i think i'm better off having gone there than if i went anywhere else
if anything, i'd be a completely different person

really the problem there is all the unnecessary stress
it's dangerously high
people have had nervous breakdowns and had to leave, or even tried to commit suicide
a big part of the problem is the higher ups
they're so bent on appearances and stupid rules all they do is create more stress, without teaching the students anything
and they're not open at all to student-induced change, even when it's for the better

the thing that bothers me the most about that place is the hypocrisy
there's so much there it makes me sick, and there's nothing a student can do about it; all our efforts are always thwarted
they say they want to hear our suggestions, then shoot us down as soon as something we say isn't too their liking, without even giving us a chance to explain ourselves
they claim to be "empowering young women," then they refuse to take suggestions, shoot down efforts to make positive change, and tell us we can't even go to prom without a man!
(no offense, Morgan, I would have asked you anyway, but some people couldn't go because of that, and Vicky was almost one of them)

and a lot of the homework is meaningless
there were days when i felt like a drudge, working for someone else
i'd get up way, way too early, run around like a chicken with her head cut off all day long doing stupid things and being told i had to do even more work, then come home at the end of the day wondering where the past seven hours had gone, feeling completely drained, and having learned nothing
i learn more on h2g2!

in short, way too much stress
if i could go back to the end of eigth grade and choose a different high school i wouldn't
but i'm not gonna miss the place
(some of the people maybe, but not the school itself)
