I thankfully was at work and did not have to worry at all at accidently scrolling to that channel.

Our New Year celebration two(?) years ago was watching all three LoTR extended editions back to back, with plenty of food and booze. 'Twas good.
The first film I really enjoy, the second has it's moments, and the third is the least interesting. Basically when they're not wasting time having big fight scenes, it's not bad. The directing is adequate, if not inspired.
I wouldn't suggest watching them by yourself. You need people to point and laugh with.

I found them alright just because I'm a Sean Bean fan, and for the sheer amount of quotable material. I'm sure I spent most of my last year in sixth-form saying "[name], what do your elf eyes see?" for no good reason.

Most of what you say seems to be for no good reason. "I support Leeds United" being first and foremost.
