It's now *officially* the run up to Christmas
There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Nov 16, 2005
We're halfway through November - I don't think it's out of order to be getting Christmassy by now. After all, there's only about five weeks to go. If you've been bombarded by Christmas for a month or more already, *that's* out of order, but by this time of the year you should be expecting ads for Ferrero Roché, Castellas, Davidoff and Famous Grouse (be careful which one you drink and which one you slosh on your boat race ).

I didn't say that I welcome the Christmas ads (or Christmas full stop), merely that you shouldn't be surprised about them at this stage of the proceedings

The original proprietor? Well I'm willing to bet folding that he'll be back eventually.
GB, of course you can hide from all of the Christmas threads here
I'm set to thinking about what I'm going to have for Christmas dinner this year, now that I don't have to eat someone else's idea of a festive meal. Current plans are running along the lines of Spinach and Ricotta Lasagna with Mushrooms and Pine Nuts

I'm not really here Posted Nov 17, 2005
I've been enjoying the B&Q advert for a couple of weeks - their set living room looks really lovely and cosy, very similar colours to mine!
I don't understand why people get grouchy about christmas? For ferks sake, there's plenty of time to be miserable the rest of the year, without stamping on the cheerfulness of other people.
I've had the worst year of my bloody life this year, and I'd quite life to settle into some xmas cheer without some grumpy bugger visiting all the threads spreading misery! If you don't like it, just keep away!

even though in 'normal' Christmassy terms I don't start thinking about it till aroudn the 20th of December, the drinking is always good to get started on early in the eternal search for the Christmas spirit

Good to see fellow bah humbuggers around. I can't stand the whole season (5 years of retail sales will do that) and this year in particular I am feeling misanthropic to say the least. I've got a good bottle of single malt to keep me company through it.

I flatly refuse to do anything Xmassy-related until after my daughter's birthday. Oh and then there's my grandson's on the 14th Dec...
I really hate all those tinny carols being pumped into the shops.

Seems to me that humbugs get too caught up in all the commercial crap about Christmas, or else dislike the religious stuff about it.
For me it's simply a time to celebrate the 'birth of compassion', so to speak. In the Jesus myth, this was largely what it was about (though I'm not religious myself). You know, to make some extra effort with people, to share gifts with friends and loved ones, as well as good food and drink. Just a time to remember what we should be doing all year long. But without a holiday to remind us I fear we might forget altogether. And anyhow, it's fun.
Happily I don't watch tv nor listen to commercial radio so I miss all the post-Halloween build-up to Commercial Christmas.
But right now I'm watching the streets in Seville being prepared . . . white fairy lights in the orange trees that line the streets, colourful Christmas lights outlining angels, santas, reindeer, holly, etc, that hang across the narrow streets in the city centre, shops starting to put up Christmassy window displays and guys selling roasted chestnuts on street-corner braziers. It just looks and feels so . . . magical, somehow.
Christmas lights are officially turned on here the night of the Immaculada (Dec.8) and turned off again the day after Epiphany (Jan.6) - just enough time to enjoy and appreciate it all.

Didn't you know Christmas has been banned in the UK? It's not politically-correct. No Christmas lights for us!

Can't fool me, GB. Friends I know here go to London during the long weekend at the beginning of December *just* to see the Christmas lights there.
Once I went to Brighton late November and thought I'd walked into a magical fairyland . . . it were luverly.
