Isn't Latin just Italian spelled wrong, or did I read the wrong books about linguistics?

Italian is Latin in the ablative, according to my sainted friend Father Lawrence.
But Latin doesn't belong on KB's coat of arms. English, Irish, and Ulster Scots, so.
