Look mate, when the zombie hordes arrive in Southern France (though how you'd tell the difference from the tourists I don't know) you'll be grateful you read this thread.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Posted Oct 14, 2005
I thought I'd been invaded by darliks this morning.... this strange concotions of electrical cabeling and strange odd tower shapped metal thing took me a few minutes to realise its a half built PC with teh motherboard kinda sticking out on teh sliding tray mechanism I should try to get more sleep.... could have sworn we were joined by several of the undead last night in the pub..... turned out to be John Major and a few of his friends who'd popped over from Huntingdon to Cambridge for an evening out..... those guys are scarey

>in a sarcastic sort of 'ignore me, I'm just a rock star (but your kids love me and listen to me)' kind of way.<
So it's got nothing to do with saying 'Sod it, I don't care if you think I'm a loser, I'm gonna do my own thing anyway cos otherwise I might end up like you '?

That also occurs. I'd be cautious of selling them that short though. The capitalisation of the words deliberately draws attention to them.
I also guess that the song was written after Columbine, so may reflect something of the 'Marilyn Manson anti-christ bringer of the apocalypse' hysteria that was going round.

I often think the house has been invaded by Daleks, but that's probably soemthing to do with teh computer making odd dalek noises instead of sensible error alerts.

You've not heard my computer speaking have you? this new PC is going to be so I hope we've bought everything we need to build it now.... Esp as its half put together I think I've already spent far too much on teh componants

Jello Biafra (of "Dead Kennedies" fame) once made a absolutly side splitting speech about how Manson gets US legislaters nickers in a twist.; If you can find the MP3 it is *well* worth a listen.

Fairly ironic given that the authorities never really got into a twist about the (ostensibly) bigger social threat of the much more politically motivated Biafra and cohorts...

IMO you've missed the point of the song entirely and you're looking for deep political meaning where there is none or at least not as much as you make out.
They were teenagers. Fairly astute ones, granted. But teenagers nonetheless. And yes, I realise that doesn't mean they can't have political views before you say anything. They wrote songs for *other* teenagers, the majority of whom would rather buy a song that they can identify with about how isolating it can be to be a teenager sometimes than one with deeper meaning. That would mean they'd have to think about something other than themselves for a start

Do try and keep up at the back.
The Dead Kennedys were strictly 'counter-culture' (or possibly 'sub-culture'), *never* 'popular culture'.

I take your point about Good Charlotte, but the writers intent is not always the same as the writers affect...
Maybe it is my meaning I've put on that song. I like songs that I can intepret differently.

Indeed, in fact one of the more funny bits is where Jello is explaining exactly what he would give to be able to effect legislators in the same way MM does!

If you like songs that can be interpreted differently, why do you run screaming from my folk collection? Most of that is *supposed* to have multiple meanings.
Sub-culture, counter-culture... Hell, it's a) post 1970 and b) not SF. Therefore as far as I'm concerned it goes into one big jar marked 'stuff I don't know about'.

Or hunting rabbits. Or sailing ships. Or vegetables. Or indeed, in some rare cases, going for a nice healthy walk.
Key: Complain about this post
