A great personal loss...

Post 1

bludragon, aka the Dragon Queen of Damogran

The bludragon has been away from h2g2 for quite a while, but when hearing about the most untimely death of DNA I had only one thought; to be here, with all of the people who feel this loss as I do.

I read THHGTTG many, many years ago, and DNA was one of those authors who 'spoke' to me. It is impossible to express how it feels to read the writings of someone who is able to put into words those things that you feel yourself. To be able to capture that rare combination of life perspective, humor and the great sense of the ridiculous is only part of what makes his work so unique. To have the ability to make the insanity of the world bearable, at least for a little while, is a rare gift.

There are two men I always said I would like to be stranded on a desert island with. Now I guess it will just be me and Kurt Vonnegut.

Although we never met, I have lost one of my best friends.

Nicely put.

I can't really think what to write here myself. What can you say about a man whose work you've been quoting to uncomprehending people for the last 23 years? And then this sit e came along and all these people who understand are just a mouse click away.

Stay with us this time, blu. It's what he would have wanted.

I know exactly what you mean. I feel like a favorite piece of me has just been removed.

I really do feel like we are at a wake.

I am glad we happened to be online at the same time. I only see a few people I recognize, although I think it is because many of them have changed their names and I dont remember their numbers.

I will try to stay around more, but RL is still getting in the way, it is very difficult. Maybe I just need to go and reread THHGTTG again.

We are at a wake. An electronic one is something new. I've never seen so much eloquently expressed sorrow, and that's when you know this is a special place.

The gang's still here. I've even seen a post from Old Wolf tonight. They'll all be turning up over the next few days. I'm really glad to have a computer at home at last and be able to use it to pay my respects in private. (An' it's a Mac too - I thought of you when we bought it...)

has Old Wolf come and gone? I dont see his name posted right now.

I have checked a few people I had bookmarks for. Greebo doesnt seem to be here, and I guess 'nonnie is gone for who knows how long. Ormondroyd said hello as soon as I signed on, but there are lots of others I think I should know, but I dont. I feel just like in real life when I meet someone and I cant remember their name...

DNA would also be pleased that you got a Mac. smiley - smiley

I thought I saw Old Wolf on http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F641?thread=111594 Greebz is definitely still with us, and I saw Nonnie a few weeks ago. The hated moderation process hasn't caught up with older threads like almost everything to do with Damogran, or you could at least go there and remind yourself of all these good friends we have. I suspect they'll all be back here in a day or two. The real trick seems to be hanging on to you... :-) The Mac is proving a delight, but has knocked my sleep for six, as I knew having a machine at home would. I'll be going to bed after this post (nearly 2 am and just had a nice meal and lots of drink with Moira and her parents...)
