And I'm already in trouble from a friend who was home in Niagara at the time (she's at uni this side of the pond). I protested that I didn't have contact details, but apparently there's only two entries in the phone book with her surname.

Phone books contain errors sometimes, though. Plus, it's annoying to be the *other* person with that surname if you get called before tghe right one.

In my neck of the woods, Los Angeles, we have two important criteria to true friendship: Will they drop you off / pick you up at the airport, and, Will they help you move house? 
Then, of course, there's the "Will they help you bury the bodies?" kinds of friends...
