I'm not sure how cold it actually is here in Glasgow, but apparently the wind is gusting at 65mph.

Zantic is further north, and on the east coast, so will probably be colder.

65 mph is a mighty powerful wind chill factor. I don't think we had gusts any worse than that during the hurricane last month.

Here, it's 18 C and sunny. Can't complain about that! One in a weeklong series of gorgeous, postcard-perfect fall days. The leaves are just beginning to think about changing color. Wednesday, it's supposed to be 23 C.

I don't actually know what the temperature is, but the wind is well up and I've had to put the heating on. smiley - yikes Dundee is basically on the mouth of the river Tay, BigRed, and built on a hill, on which I am at the top. So when I say the wind is up, I mean UP! When I get a bit more cash I'm going to buy myself a Gallileos thermometer (the beautiful glass ones with different coloured liquid in the bulbs) so I can tell you exactly how cold COLD is.... smiley - winkeye

Whisky smiley - tongueout Leave me be, I've been living in London for the last four years, and for the last two years of that in a flat where the other occupant found 30C to be pleasantly cool. So the heating was always on. And I don't have an spirits in the house. smiley - brr

I have a new cat, unfortunately it don't produce it's own head, but makes a perfect cushion while lying under the rug on the sofa. No pets allowed I'm afraid...

Tea (or hot non-alky cider) is my usual response to winter chillies. But too much before bedtime, and you know what happens. ...

Ah, but isn't the thing with like a hurricane that the wind is sustained speed, as opposed to just gusts? Gusts of 90-100 mph aren't uncommon in storms here, but they'll be short bursts.

Ah, the northern States in the Fall - I took a lovely road trip up through Wisconsin and Michigan one year. Absolutley gorgeous smiley - smiley

Re hurricanes: You are correct about the sustained wind, but it didn't pass right over us so we didn't get that. It was a 300-mile-wide storm though, so places that were hit got battered for HOURS with high wind.

But in hurricane Hugo, which I was in in 1989, the sustained wind speed was 74 mph when it passed over us. Barely hurricane strength but it took down four trees in our yard, one of them at least 12 feet in diameter at the base.

In two weeks, I'm going to New York City for a few days and then on to Vermont. Vermont is GORGEOUS in the autumn, but we will have missed the peak of the leaves. (There it's early October.) We'll enjoy it up through New York state and Connecticut though.
