"To Dr Michael Bull, portable music players are "multi-faceted transformative devices".
No they're not, they're irritating machines which cut people off from the world around them (as the story points out further down) and p!ss off those who have to put up with the 'tss tss tss tss' leaking out of the headphones of the muppet listening to one of these things on the bus. I'm proud to say that I've never owned one.
One of the saddest things I've ever seen is a mother walking along a street with her young daughter (about four or five years old I'd say). The kid was doing typical kid things - looking around and asking her mother questions about what she saw... which her mother couldn't hear any of them because she was wearing a personal stereo
It's one of the handful of times in my life I've wanted to hit a woman

I don't ever wear those things in public, Gosho. I don't need to. I always have a soundtrack running in my head, which is impossible to disconnect. I'm just in my own little world. Besides, those earphones tend to be bad for one's hearing. Both of my parents are hearing-impaired, so I want to protect my own hearing as I go forward.

I've just been watching 'behind the scenes' programme with the last five contestants of this year's AmericanIdol (don't ask ).
Anyway. The presenter spoke with each contestant for about five minutes - asking how they are holding up, how they are coping with the pressure, what drives them on. The youngest contestant is 16 years old. I heard her say 'I've had a full life'.
You're 16 years old for f***'s sake! How can you say 'I've had a full life'? Who writes your script?
Of the other two I saw out of the five, they both mentioned God. You can't do a damn thing in this country without God getting in on the act. There was programme on last week (which I missed, but plan to watch online http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jesus/ ) which I think had something say about the matter.

Tell that to Osama Bin Laden, who wrote, in the mid-1990s, that the U.S. was unfortunately lacking in religion. If God isn't a religious figure, then what is He?
(Um, better not answer that, as it was a hypothetical question)

I wonder a) where Osama got his information from, and b) how different his idea of 'religious' is to ours. I wonder also if he has changed his mind since the 2000 election.

The U.S. is not a Muslim state, therefore it has no religion. Even the Muslims who live here are probably corrupted by exposure to the ways of the infidels.
What a world, what a world!

There is a big difference between using "God" in every sentence, thanking God for everything from catching the bus to surviving and earthquake, and professing to be a "Christian"; and actually following Christian principles.
I know a lot of people who "call" themselves Christians who don't act like Christians. I also know a lot of people who don't adhere to a particular religion who are either more "spiritual" or act in ways that are more "Christian" than the people who claim to be Christians.
I would say that George Bush is about as much a Christian ans Osama Bin Laden is a Muslim.

Well, yes, Faith Pawloski would probably laugh if you mentioned it to her, but she'd also laugh if you asked her to explain Fermat's Last Theorem.

Before I write this, I want to let all my American friends that this isn't a rant about Americans or America, it's a rant about the muppet who stole the last election and all those who think like him.
I just heard President George Bush say, I believe in response to a journalist's qestion about the allegations that the White House OK'd torture in Iraq and Afghanistan - "The values of this country are such that torture is not within our soul".
Why don't you tell that to all the people who were taken from Africa, sold into slavery, and treated so badly? Why don't you tell that to the descendents of the same people who were lynched in their thousands across the south in the 20th century? Why don't you tell that to the inmates of so many American prisons? Why don't you tell that to the family of James Byrd Junior - the man who was tied to the back of a truck and dragged to his death just because he was black? Why don't you tell that to the family of Matthew Shepherd - the kid who was savagely beaten, then tied to a fence and left to die just because he was gay?
Are you that ing out of touch with the country you govern George? Are you in denial? Or are you just too ing stupid to know that anything goes on beyond the end of your smug little nose? Either way, you're not fit to govern.

Here we go again!
<>
I'd rephrase the last few words to "and all those who, like him, don't think."
<<"The values of this country are such that torture is not within our soul".>>
Actually, the tendency toward torture is most likely in our genes, though upbringing plays a role in bringing it out.

What does fitness for governing have to do with running for President?
