Sydney isn't that capital of Australia is it?
So what is?

Doesn't the Australian accent scare anyone else apart from me?

No, fool! Canberra is the capital!

Canberra's the capital, it's just that Sydney appears to be the place everyone actually wants to go to!

Does the Australian accent scare me? Well I've been mistaken for an Australian so many times that no, not really. (Australian people always find this incomprehensible - I have a pretty obviously English accent IMHO, and most Aussies seem to agree, but Americans seem to misidentify me as an Australian all the time!)

Sorry...I love the Aussie accent! I consider it the "Southern Accent of the UK"!.....It's definitely unmistakable(unless I'm put to a test...then I'll claim no contest!smiley - winkeye)

I've been to Sydney, and I thought it was the Los Angeles of Australia, which is not a good thing. If you weren't in a section of town that was a toilet, you were in a section of town where you couldn't come into the clubs at night without a collared shirt and sensible shoes, and as a casual sort of guy, this is something I've always been against. So when I ended up in Sydney the second time around, I tried to take a train to Canberra, but the wait would have been too long, so instead I went up the coast to Newcastle, and had a riotously good time.

I love the Aussie accent myself, especially when spoken by a woman... verrrry sexy. The only thing that ruined the effect was my own name... they cannot possibly say the long "i" vowel correctly, and it sounds hideous... sort of like how the woman originally talks in the beginning of "My Fair Lady." In order to keep from having my own name jarring at my ears, I allowed them to call me "Mick."

I figure your name is Michael then. As another Michael, I must say I've never had that problem.

Sydney and Canberra is like New York and Washington. Odd, eh? Or maybe not.

I haven't noticed that they have a problem with Michael, but I usually introduce myself as Mike (on account of the weird way my first name is spelled... makes things easier), and it was the one-syllable version that they hacked all to hell.

Canberra like Washington? Hmm... I rather liked Washington. I would have rather made the trip to Canberra, just because it was someplace new, but the locals felt I had made the right choice by going to Newcastle. Theeir opinion was that Canberra had absolutely no life to it. Made it sound like it had more in common with Indianapolis than Washington.

What I was saying was thay people get Sydney confused as the capital of Australia, just like they do with New York. Hence Canberra being like Washington. Dig? Cool smiley - smiley

Do people from other countries think that New York is the capital of the US? It's not even the capital of New York State!

Yes, this is true... Of course people think Dallas is the capital of Texas (it's Austin) and San Francisco is the capital of California (it's Sacramento). I guess the problem is that the big cities aren't the capitals...
