English stuff.

On Tuesday 28th August 2001 I walked the canal towpath from Stewponey, near Stourton, north towards Hinksford. This area is where Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire meet and I'm not sure which county I was in. It was a beautiful day and I headed north for just over an hour, had lunch at the Navigation pub, cheese salad sandwich and a pint of Marston's Pedigree Bitter, then walked back. This is a gorgeous stretch of canal with a rich variety of landscape along the way. Discovered a cherry tree in the verge beside the towpath with cherries growing on it, usually we only get those ornamental cherry trees, grown for their blossom in the spring but no actual cherries produced. A handful of people were chugging along in canal boats, and a few anglers were settled in quiet contentment, saw one young lad land a decent sized fish just as I passed him. I have only ever been fishing twice and I have no idea what sort of fish it was.

English stuff

On Thursday 9th August 2001 I had lunch at The Swan in Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire. I had a pint of Batham's bitter and a ham & tomato roll. This pub has a garden overlooking some very attractive land dotted with mature trees. In the paper there was a piece about a couple who wanted the hymn 'Jerusalem' at their wedding in Cheadle and who had been refused this choice. The musical director and the minister both felt it was 'nationalistic' and inappropriate. I disagree and think they are talking nonsense. On Friday 10th August I went for a long walk along the River Severn in Shropshire. Weather beautiful and not too hot. I started at Arley and walked the western bank to Hampton Loade, saw some large dragonflies, one ot them about 4 inches long. Had lunch at The Unicorn, Guiness and tuna sandwich, then crossed on the ferry and had another pint at The Lion, a beer called Old Hookey which I liked intensely. Then walked back along the eastern bank. This is one of my favourite parts of England. Its 18 years since I first went to The Lion and about 3 years since I last went there,I was really pleased to see it unchanged and apparently doing well.

Jobs

March 11th 2000. There is a widely held general impression in the UK that we have good employment laws that protect employees from vicious, manipulative, power-crazed bosses. Well I hate to be a miserable git but I've just had another week discovering how deluded all us UK citizens are. If you have worked for a company for less than a year, it appears that you can be sacked without warning for ....well, for nothing, if the boss decides they dont like you. There are a few exceptions to do with sexism and racism and 'whistle-blowing' but there is nothing to stop a boss suddenly deciding he/she doesnt trust you anymore, and as long as they give you the required notice they can dismiss you. If there are any employment lawyers out there who want to pick an argument I would love to be wrong about this.

Seven

January 8th 2000.Watched 'Seven' last night.Great movie. Of course in real life they would have got to the field with all the electricity pylons and found the delivery van had already been and gone, and a card stuck on one of the towers saying 'We attempted to deliver your package but unfortunately you were not available, it can now be collected from our 51st Street depot, thankyou'.
