March 11th 2000. There is a widely held general impression in the UK that we have good employment laws that protect employees from vicious, manipulative, power-crazed bosses. Well I hate to be a miserable git but I've just had another week discovering how deluded all us UK citizens are. If you have worked for a company for less than a year, it appears that you can be sacked without warning for ....well, for nothing, if the boss decides they dont like you. There are a few exceptions to do with sexism and racism and 'whistle-blowing' but there is nothing to stop a boss suddenly deciding he/she doesnt trust you anymore, and as long as they give you the required notice they can dismiss you. If there are any employment lawyers out there who want to pick an argument I would love to be wrong about this.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
