Just realised looking at my newspaper Dr Who is on every night on NHK channel 11 which is a bs channel

Awix Posted Sep 27, 2006
I have no idea which TV channels I actually receive! I will surf around at 10pm tonight.
Japan is okay so far, what I've seen of it - very gaijin-friendly (well, maybe not the weather). Done Ryogoku, Shinjuku and Yokohama so far, Yokohama was great (reminded me of home in a funny way).
The job is funny, still not used to the strange hours (and following lack of proper social life).
Food's fantastic (apart from chanko, which made me slightly ill). Haven't tried natto yet, before you ask...

Channel 5 is wow wow you have to pay extra for it .
Channel 7 and 11 is nhk satalite channells you need to buy a dish and receiver once bought it doesn't cost any extra to watch .
I don;t like natto either

That would be why I can only get a wibbly wobbly picture in black and white with no sound. Never mind I can still follow the plot, and it's something from home!

Go chat to someone in a big electric store , dishes are real cheap n I think our first box for channel 5,7,11 was combined with dvd machine ,best of luck .
Still like to know where you are

Oh sorry!
I'm between Tokyo and Chiba, a district called Inage - not where I expected but still okay.
Managed to get to Shinjuku, Ryogoku, and Yokohama so far. More to follow depending on what days I get off!

Still think you would enjoy The Barge Inn very close to the Narita train station , friday or saturday evening , might find a giejin to help you with getting a bs channel .We gave our stuff away.
Bs channel is built in to our tv and we pay for sky sat, never watch japanese regular channels not worth it

I know Inage a little .Used to use the main road through on the way to tokyo on a bike with a passenger , couldn't use the toll road with a passenger n If I remember Inage got the new train line up in the air?

Most of the Chiba lines seem elevated to some degree, but yeah, it is.
I have heard mixed reviews of the Barge but am getting to the point where I know people well enough to decide whether their opinion is likely to agree with mine or not, so I may check it out next weekend.
Probably wandering over into Tokyo tomorrow to have a look at Harajuku and Shibuya, unless I get a better offer (some of my friends are working the highland games that day so probably nothing else happening).

Yeah it's okay - did Harajuku (Omotesando and Meiji-jingu) on Sunday, went out to a place called Yorukeikoku on Monday. Had a good time but it seems like every time I go out it's with a different set of people! So I don't really feel rooted here yet.
But my gaijin card has come through and I've signed up for Japanese lessons, so that's maybe starting to change.

Not sure I could find it again! Went with old Japanese hands (well, three years or so). We went from Chiba to Goi by proper train then on for another hour in what was basically a crate on wheels, caught a bus the rest of the way (past the Kannon Bridge, I think).
I am hoping to see more of the country outside the Tokyo sprawl but I am not confident enough to do this with my current level of Japanese!

I see they have taken doctor who off the air, must have been one series only I saw a bit of it looked quite new,I'm happy really cause i'm a ER fan and thats what they put on instead .
Think that last train you were on must have been the old local train, you can often see the wild monkeys from it .
The weather here is now getting cooler but I think you will enjoy winter weather here it's mostly dry sunny days not too cold at all .
xmas is very different than back home most people work and children may get taken to the toy shop one week early to get there one present but new year is dead so just tuck in for the duration. Chat again later

I think Dr Who's just on Tuesdays now (it was on last night anyway).
I have heard Japan, or at least Tokyo, is dead over Xmas but impossible to travel around over New Year. Everyone I know seems to either be going to Hokkaido or leaving for Australia, Thailand, or Fiji!@The staff newsletter has a standard request that everyone get a re-entry visa before the Xmas holiday.@

I don't think Tokyo is dead over xmas just another day feeling and new year will be dead .Sounds to me like your in a small juku like nova etc , maybe that will be a good time to see another part of asia lots of foriegners use that time to get away n if you like skiing then go to hokkaido just remember it WILL be different for you this year.
Im at the moment making cornish pasties because I love them and I have a big oven I imported from usa so I will be cooking a christmas dinner usually manage to get a xmas pudding too but it's usually a nice sunny warm day so don't really feel like xmas.
Glad that you can watch dr who , did you get set up for channel 11 ? I presume so .
If you get the chance and it is cheap now go with a friend down under for xmas nice and warm there for xmas bbq on the beach even .just I think Tokyo is not the place to be for the holidays . got to go back into the kitchen and finish making my dinner .

Still not sure, don't really know anyone that well (and anyway they all made their plans before I came out). May do Oz next summer when the weather suits better.
Went over to Narita today, The Barge seems okay (a bit dead when I was there though), Dry Blackthorn never tasted so good to me before!
