Jonathan Vernon
I spend between 2 and 16 hours a day writing. I used to spend 6 months a year writing my own stuff, the rest of the time writing for others.
I've kept a journal on and off for 25 years from age 13 (without a break for the first 12 years). Having been packed off to boarding school aged 7 I've written thousands of letters to (some of which I now have back from deceased grandparents). Everything I can remember, from my earliest memories to a period where I covered countless dreams (until I found I wasn't getting enough sleep) has been written up somewhere.
I recall potty training and sleeping in a cot. The trauma of sleeping in a sling for 6 months due to an illness and having a brace on my leg aged 3 has probably had something to do with my being able to remember events way back then.
I direct, that's been going on for nearly 20 years, though the only credits I'm proud of are a couple of short films shown on UK TV, and a couple of memorable and persuasive training films. The rest comes under the banner "corporate communications." i.e. business television.
The day job has got me into some strange places: the shear cave of the Thorpe Nuclear Reprocessing Plant the week before it was commissioned, the haute couture and pret a porter fashion shows in Paris, as well as countless retail outlets, car distributors, manufacturers and company offices in the UK.
I'd only been going out with my partner for 3 days when I asked her to marry me. We now have 2 children and wonder if we may have at least 2 more.) Blah Blah Blah Blah.
The worst entry I have ever made in a dairy was my first: "I have big hands, which means I will be tall." I was 13 when I wrote it. The diary fell into the wrong hands at school and I never lived it down. Worse still, although I'm 6ft tall, my best friends from school were all 2 or 3 inches taller. So much for big hands. (Good for typing with it would seem).
One last piece of trivia before you all fall asleep - despite 3 years studying at Oxford University, the 3 week intensive typing course I took at the local college of Higher Education has proved far, far, far, far more valuable.
N.B. If I could remove the SAD entries below from a 15 year old dairy I would. There are better things to share with the world.
