Ah, Insomnia!
Posted Jun 18, 2005
While it gives you a lot of extra time, there's not a lot you can do with it since so many things are ruled out by the clock. And anyway, it vanishes round about the time you should be getting up anyway.
So I'm just hoking and poking into the corners of hootoo a little bit. There's been a lot of soul searching going on about the guide recently. Is it too staid, is it this, is it that, what can we do to save X, Y or Z?
As irritating as it can be though, it's nothing new, as I've just found out: F19585?thread=219237&skip=0&show=20
These concerns pop up occasionally, but it doesn't mean the end is nigh!

VE Day and bananas
Posted May 20, 2005
I noticed recently that anyone I've ever heard talking about being a child on VE Day talks about seeing their first banana that day. What gives? Is this some sort of dodgy collective memory?
I know bananas where obviously scarce during the war years. But was there really such a massive influx of them as soon as Victory in Europe was announced?
Perhaps the journalist Barry White has the answer:
"All the talk about VE Day reminded me of the barrage balloon tethered in the green in front of Inst, the foreignness of the neutral south, which has never left me, and my first banana. Actually, it was boiled parsnip flavoured with banana essence but we didn't know any better."

Wonder who'll be the first to take offence?

Not so sure about that "good part" line though!

Surprising
Posted Nov 30, 2004
In researching the Drennan article I've been surprised how little there is written about William Drennan. There don't seem to be any biographies written about him - he rates at most a paragraph in most books on the United Irishmen or the politics or the period (I've a couple of thoughts as to why that is which I might put in the Entry). There is his correspondence however, but it seems quite hard to get hold of.

Starting on a new entry
Posted Nov 28, 2004
I'm begining to do the groundwork for an article on William Drennan. One of the benefits of writing entries for the guide is what you learn yourself when writing them! I'm learning a lot of things I didn't know about the guy, or that I have forgotten since the first time I found them out.
I'm not sure when I'll have it ready. It is going to take a while, I think.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
