Hi KB!
I haven't given this a huge amount of thought but my current thinking is:
1) Introduction
2) Formation and History (this may need to be subdivided into periods) - http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/about-us/our-history/ has some info.
3) How they do it
4) The OS Today (subdivided into features of the Explorer Series vs. the Landranger Series, GPS mapping, the new custom maps)
I've probably missed stuff, anything you can think of?

That's probably about right, it sounds logical. It's probably a good idea to do this as a collaborative - there's an awful lot in it! (I was thinking of including the survey of Ireland, but there's probably enough in it without that ).
Are there any particular aspects you'd like to do?
How about one of us does a bit of an intro and the end of the 18th Century, and the other takes it up at 1801 from the one-inch map of Kent up until Colby's era, say?

You clearly know a lot more about it than I do (I know nothing about this map of Kent or Colby of which you speak), so pick what you want to do / know most about and I'll work around it!

No worries. I'll do an intro and start the early history up to 1800 or so.
Actually, it might be an idea to check the guide and see what's already there on the matter. I never thought of doing that. I'll have a browse tomorrow.

I'm away for the weekend and have a job interview on Wednesday, but at some point I'll write up a section on OS maps today.

I hope the interview went well!
I'm inclined to think that this entry is trying to cram too much information into too small a space. Maybe we should stop the collab entry.

Thanks, I find out at the end of this week.
If that's what you want... do you think maybe several smaller entries or just not at all?

Maybe park it for now anyway...Splitting it into different entries is probably a good idea, though. Maybe one as a sort of a brief history of it all, one like a kind of "user's guide to an OS map", and one about how they're put together? I'm not really sure...
(I read today that this is the 222nd anniversary of the Ordnance Survey, by the way. )
Key: Complain about this post
