I most certainly will not ignore that fifth word - it's far too splendid to let go With your permission I shall use it as often as I can
Any road up, yes, cacti are specialistically adapted - to be drought and heat tolerant. Which is why over-watering and over-colding (see, I can make up words too) will do them in
It is equally possible to bump them off by not watering them, and there are some that can't take the baking heat of a Texas summer, believe it or not.

I was hoping you'd tell me more about them. I haven't grown them, but I know you have, and I am fascinated by the different ways they adapt to their surroundings. There are lots of different ways!

Cacti are adapted to high heat and low rainfall. Their leaves have evolved into spines. That's pretty much the beginning and the end of it. There's no special reason why some are tall and some are round. As far as I remember, they were originally from the new world - the Americas. Any you see growing in Europe, for instance, are essentially a foreign/transplanted/introduced species. I doubt any of them could be considered invasive in the way that bamboo or Japanese knotweed are.

it's a cactus garden with all types, from massive, really massive ones to tiny little specimens. If you go at the right time of the year you can see the flowers too. It's one of Cesar Manrique's works, and as I was just asked about him in another thread it brought this to mind when I came over here.

The wonder of H2G2. No where else I will confidently assert, will you ever meet someone related to a person who could kill mint.

blimey, we need to have a 10th anniversary meet up (although I seem to remember ending up in hospital on the way back from that one with a suspected heart attack on the train)

I'd be on for a German meet, geld and practicalities permitting!
Yesterday I got one of those occasional "feck this for a game of dominoes, I wanna go to Germany" spasms which appear from out of the blue every so often.
I haven't been since Berlin in....was it 2011? Too long.

I was in Hamburg briefly last year as a stopover on my way to Riga, and again on my way back from Saint Petersburg. After the Saint Petersburg airport, the Hamburg one seemed like heaven.
