And not in a good way either.
I put up with your failure to see the Godfather trilogy, but now I learn you didn't like Pan's Labyrinth - you've plumbed new depths there.
But seriously, I'm going to ask you the same question I ask everyone who's seen it, because I like to hear the different answers:
Did you think it had a happy or a sad ending?
Oh, and a belated happy feast of Mithras and Hogmanay

Oof! Happy or sad? I *guess* happy, in a transendent sort of way. Except that I don't really do transcendence.
It's not so much that I didn't like it...more that I didn't quite see what got everyone so excited. I've got a DVD of 'The Lives Of Others' waiting a convenient moment. I'm hoping that turns out to be a drier squib.
HNY back atcha. Lang may yer lum reek, as we say in these here parts.

Hey hope it's okay if I but in with my worth.
Definitely sad for me. That's what made the film for me. That *reality* was real. And the other thing fantasy, although seemingly real for the child. Her way of dealing with the 'reality' of the horror of what was going on with the adults around her.
Funnily enough I think there was a parallel with the ending of Gilliam's 'Brazil' Although most see that as a sad ending I see it as happy.
yes I'm a contrary so and so too, Ed

Brazil a Happy ending? Surely it's the ultimate expression of 'A boot stamping on a face, forever.'?
We watched 'Das Leben der Anderen' on Saturday. An amazing film!

SPOILER ALERT. 'BRAZIL'
Re Brazil. I was thinking of the hero at the end who is lost in his dream world with the girl in a beautiful place away from that world because of the comatose state he's in. Your right though it's hardly optimistic for the society in general.
It's a fascinating story about the film in real life. Gilliam had to fight tooth and nail the American studio, forget which one, for about 2 years I think it was for the film to be put out in all its rambling length and for the ending to be 'bleak'; they wanted a happy one. Gilliam's story about it is on the web somewhere, well worth a read. deNiro who was a friend of Gilliam's was instrumental in helping Gilliam win the fight eventually.
