i know my scottish sgt used to call me one so i assume it's a rude word, he was never very nice to anyone.

Err...As far as I'm aware, it's used affectionately. Certainly I have a close friend from Lewis who's happy to refer to himself as a Teuchter.
Sure, one has to be careful about these things. Largely down to the vicious N-word, we're generally scared of ethnic epithets. On the other hand...I'm originally from Liverpool, but I'd see nothing at all insulting about the word 'Scouser'. See also 'Geordie'.
I think 'Teuchter' comes originaly from the English-speaking Scots' impression of the Gaelic language: 'a-Heuchtie Teuchtie...'
But it sounds like you're a hielan'man. Am I wrong?

a hielan'man = a highlander? Nope, sadly i've never travelled further north than Scarborough. Though from from what I'm told it's like Wales except colder and it rains more
despite the disadvantage of being born in England my father was welsh, his father was welsh and then back 4 more generations where we then came from Southern Ireland.
I claim to be British but am very proud of both my Welsh and Irish ancestry.
