Err...As far as I'm aware, it's used affectionately. Certainly I have a close friend from Lewis who's happy to refer to himself as a Teuchter.

Sure, one has to be careful about these things. Largely down to the vicious N-word, we're generally scared of ethnic epithets. On the other hand...I'm originally from Liverpool, but I'd see nothing at all insulting about the word 'Scouser'. See also 'Geordie'.

I think 'Teuchter' comes originaly from the English-speaking Scots' impression of the Gaelic language: 'a-Heuchtie Teuchtie...'

But it sounds like you're a hielan'man. Am I wrong?

a hielan'man = a highlander? Nope, sadly i've never travelled further north than Scarborough. Though from from what I'm told it's like Wales except colder and it rains more smiley - winkeye

despite the disadvantage of being born in England my father was welsh, his father was welsh and then back 4 more generations where we then came from Southern Ireland.

I claim to be British but am very proud of both my Welsh and Irish ancestry.
