Looking for jobs
Menthol Penguin - Currently revising/editing my book Started conversation May 10, 2010
Seeing as I want one of those shiny new tablet things (I may not get one, its just an idea atm) I've decided that I need a job so that I can use EMA for uni/gap year etc.
So I asked around this morning. WHSmiths (who I did work experience for) said if they have jobs they'll stick a poster in the window and I can then get an application form, ASDA also said to check back whenever I'm in there (most lunchtimes) so there may be some summer jobs around. Nowhere else in town had any jobs. I need to look through the local newspaper really but I doubt that there will be many in there.

If you're looking for part time term time work then yes, that's best. Plus bung an application into all the supermarkets. Dunno about nowadays but they did used to keep them on file for 6 months I got my job job at food giant (whatever that is now called!) that way (well, sorta, bit more convoluted but there ya go).
And when it gets closer to summer see if the likes of Padleys or Christian Salversen have owt going, though not sure if they employ under 18s.

I'd prefer a summer job but part-time would do. Not asked around today, I'll go tomorrow during my free period.

Kent's a bit far for me. I forgot to check if there were any jobs in ASDA, nevermind I'll do it Monday

Dunno how old you are MP, but have you considered cinema work?
It's a good laugh, decent perks and pretty convenient hours. It's how I supported myself at Uni.

The cinema in town isn't huge but it might still have work. Cheers HI, I'll add to my list.
I'm 17 if that helps anyone, I still need to check one of the tech shops but I don't think that they'll have any jobs. I seem to be waiting for people to go off to uni so I can try and get one of their jobs.

Writing my CV atm, the only slight problem I have is that most of my interests lie in the computer area and I don't want to appear to y. I've stuck down that I like listening to music (which I do, ask my mum) but I can't play an instrument but it doesn't seem quite right, it seems a bit at odds. Any ideas?

walking/cycling?
Reading?
Surfing the web for pr0n. um, no, maybe not that one
Creating artwork for the BBC's online collaborative encyclopedia and creative writing website?
Writing articles for same?
Breaking your sister's computer?
Home DIY and maintenance (you've put a shelf up before haven't you?).

Technically I just discovered it was broken, well there's no evidence to the contrary
I wondered about the artwork one (I've not written a Guide Entry so can't claim that one, although I might polish my tablet entry and submit that one at some point) but I wasn't too sure about including it. I've not done a blob in ages.
Biking - can use that one (popped the inner tube though so I need to patch it or get a new one)
Home DIY - I've done some work for grandparents (helped to fit a window) and there might be other stuff, can't remember specifics though.

It's all about transferable skills my young padawan.
Your interest in computers could be used for a lot of things: research, logic and problem solving if working with code, innovation and invention if you've ever created anything new. Adaptability in learning to use new programs etc.
It's not what you do, but how you do it.

Thankyou Master Iago, I hadn't thought of it like that.
I'm just going to re-program this droid, although I do find the hardware side more interesting.

cos reprogramming hardware is so much easier - use a hammer!
What HI says is right as well. Don't just bung stuff on the CV and think no more about it - many interviewers will ask you about what you have put there, so think how you can expand on it in discussion. So yes, your interest in computers meaning you've used the internet to research problems that friends and family have with theirs and then fixed (example of resourcefullness and ability to transfer knowledge from one situation to another, plus taking the initiative to go find a solution). Cycling - how you've done longer rides even with your knee problem (example of not letting obstacles prevent you from acheiving a goal) and so forth.

They want me to hand my CV in today so I shall have to check it over again and make sure I'm not making too many huge mistakes!
