Thanks prof, to be honest I wondered if I was being a bit of a 'party pooper'smiley - sadface

Having been there (not to the same extent as your sprog), my heart sank when I read your initial posting, but then when you said that he had managed to feed himself with a sandwich it gave me a real lift. I've never met you or your son but I really feel for you both.

He seems to be doing great, having the use of your hands is somehow a kind of freedom, even if the legs are only rudimentary. If I couldn't use my hands they would have to keep me permanently sedated, I don't think I could cope with that.

Don't let me depress you, I'm doing great, I know more about more things and have a far greater interest in loads of things than during the previous part of my life, simply because I couldn't be the fool anymore.

I'm certain that your son will come through this well, he seems to be well ahead of what could be expected. And do you know what? I think that he will be a stronger man for it. Just like his dad.

Thanks for the offer, prof. I didn't quite know how to answer you without causing offence. Truth is, I don't get to travel far to visit friends because of inherent health problems. I have a 19yr old Volvo estate (automatic) which I've kept in perfect working order and had it converted to hand controls; I love to drive my old bus but there is a limit to how far I can go before my arms become so weak that I can't hold them up anymore .

Ten miles from home allows me to use 5 supermarkets, 4 garden centres (I grow a lot of our own veg: in high, raised beds), 2 D.I.Y. stores, the Doctors; Dentists and our small local Hospital, I can also visit daughter and grandson but I can't get in the house so that tends to be a whistle stop. Son and two granddaughters live about half a mile away so that's a mobility scooter trip, but I can't get into his house either. I go to the James Cook university hospital on a regular basis but that involves, either a lift from my son or a patient transport ambulance when he isn't available.

All in all, I don't do too bad and let's face it, when you are in a position of being lucky to be alive, getting about a bit and doing things is pretty darned wonderful.

Thanks again for you generous offer, prof, but I think that a jaunt to Pontefract is a bit of a no-no.smiley - hug

Take care, Bob.smiley - biggrin

Hi Prof, thanks for the message, I do have a few health matters niggling away (but who doesn't ?). All leg related, some ongoing for years, but hell, we learn to deal with stuff like that don't we.

Problem is, it all conspired to give me a bad case of restless leg syndrome, so I get very little sleep. I am now classed as sleep deprived, I can't drive (if I stop at lights I go to sleep smiley - sadface It's not much fun for my Wife either.

It will get sorted and I will be back to haunt you and the gang (isn't junior doing well smiley - applause )

Stay well my friendsmiley - hug

Thanks guys. The situation has now resolved itself or at least revealed itself to be resolved.

My Wife and her pal have an afternoon out once a week, just to the garden centre or town centre shops, have a natter and a coffee. I usually go for a lie down with my legs raised and have a long quiet kip. Such was the plan.

I managed to get my feet in a tangle and came to a stop at the bottom corner of the bed, I tried to swivel round to sit on the bed but lost my balance. About this time the floor decided to attack me, it forced my elbow into my ribs and then held me in a tight grip until help arrived ( I ALWAYS have a 'phone of some sort with me ).

So off we went, feeling very sore and embarrassed, to A & E from where I was admitted to a ward.

Long story, short... I have Congestive Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (C.O.P.D.) which I knew about, caused by decades of tobacco abuse (fool). I had a severe lung infection, which I didn't know about and a fairly severe level of sleep apnia, which I didn't know about.

All this lot contrived to give me a blood/oxygen level of 71% instead of a healthy 95%+ which ain't good when your legs don't work in the first place.
I'd been moving towards e-cigs for a while so making a complete switch wasn't remotely difficult, especially when the circumstances made me hate tobacco so much.

I'm now ten days down the line, chest is clear, blood/oxygen is 92/95%, I have a machine with a face mask that forces me to keep breathing, I get a few good hours sleep at night and might even become recognizable as a human being again. smiley - laugh
