Ferrettbadger. The Renegade Master

I think the point is that in the "Star Trek" Univererse, particularly by the time of TNG, the federation is ruled pretty well absolutly by Starfleet.

Strafleet may be a fluffy "exploration and diplomacy" sevice. But as we see time and time again it is also the Army, Navy, Airforce, Secret Services and Spy Network all rolled into one. And when time comes for war they do it with gusto.

I just don't get the 'they're a bit like the Nazis, so they must be Communists' line.

"Let's get this straight. Star Trek is in some ways similar to an extreme right-wing system and is therefore obviously based on an extreme left-wing system. Eh, what? Or am I missing something?"

Well, what you're apparently missing is every other bit of the argument apart from that one throwaway comment.

An uncritical viewing of the Trek franchise, in particular TNG, DS9 and Voyager, allows one to infer that the Federation is a Marxist dictatorship. There are all sorts of reasons, many, many of them listed in this thread, to do with fundamental facets of society as portrayed. Just a few include:

- the fact that everyone seems to work, even though given a Trek level of tech, nobody would have to
- the fact that hardly anyone seems to own any form of transport independent of the government, and that access to that is strictly controlled
- the fact that there is government oversight of individuals' movements and activities and long term storage and access to that information

The comparison with the Nazis was solely and entirely to do with the way that there appeared to be military intrusion into civilian life so pervasively. No other parallels with Nazism were mentioned, at least not by me.

Primarily, in any case, the argument is an economic one. The society of Trek is *economically* Communist. Or is it? If you think otherwise, evidence and arguments please! smiley - biggrin

Evidence and arguments? Me? Did you read my post 100? No. I was just curious and posting here seemed as good a way as any to pass the time.
