Said in a thread on ask h2g2
"Star Trek:
Starfleet is a communist military dictatorship which uses the cover of the United Federation of Planets to give it a veneer of respectability. However, they control all access to space - NOBODY in Star Trek owns their own ship, everybody gets about on Starfleet vessels or government owned passenger ships. If you're not Starfleet, you're little people. Starfleet is able to declare martial law on Earth at the drop of a hat."
I wonder just how many opinions about this SF franchice are based on gross ignorance.

Indeed! I think the person may have thought he was making a point about what *could* have been said, but you never know! Star Trek rulz!
(It's 95% better than Star Wars, which would not be hard!)

I've been know to be a bit obsessive some times but I belive I've watched it all and I have all 304 issues of the fact files. But really all you have to do is pay attention.
The famous jery ryan (seven of nine) became borg when her parent's *private* ship was assimilated.

No mental mino. They were not. Starfleet's records finished when they left federation space refusing to file a flight plan.
Damn I'm feeding the troll. Ah but what else is there to do today

Ship's designation: "SS" Raven or "USS" Raven?
It is hard to be certain of Raven's designation. In [The Raven] the designation was SS Raven NAR-32450 as the civilian registry in conjunction with the prefix NAR seems correct as the Hansens were not members of Starfleet and were not on an official mission let alone a Starfleet one, and also the ship seems to be their own private property. However, in [Dark Frontier], LCARS displays show "U.S.S. Raven" although the registry number remained NAR-32450, which would make it very unusual as it means a Starfleet "USS" with a civilian registry number. TOSTFF and Encyclopaedia list the ship as "U.S.S. Raven". Suggested excuse: in [Dark Frontier] it is stated that the Hansens' mission was approved by the Federation Council shortly before the Hansens departed. Therefore, the Raven appears in official Starfleet records, which is how come it appears in Voyager's database, and may have been redesignated "USS" while retaining the civilian registry number and of course the name "Raven". The name on the ship's dedication plaque also remained unchanged.
So both you *and* Hoo are right
I cant be a troll as you keep talking to me and you wouldnt do something as stupid as feeding a troll would you?

"I cant be a troll as you keep talking to me and you wouldnt do something as stupid as feeding a troll would you?" - refer post 4 bright boy.
No HOO was wrong - I have the fact file from paramount pictures. Your link is an opinion peice. Even if a project is sponsored be a federation counsil that doesn't mean it has anything to do with starfleet. There is an episode of Startrek TNG in where a new mining technique is being researched with a contract to *sell* to the federation.
As for martial law. I assume that is a reference to startrek DS9 during the cold pre war with the dominion. Martial was enabled by the federation president, not starfleet. An elected position BTW.

Now there was I thinking we might be able to discuss this but your answer says more about you than I ever could.
If you ever get bored with your paramount *Fact* file then try going through that thing with the 7of9 poster on it. Its called a door and there is a whole real world out there.

ah the tired old cheap shot at a star trek fan
"Now there was I thinking we might be able to discuss this" - c'mon now. Your not now trying to pretend your reason for being here isn't simply hostile. You just can't help yourself, you know I don't want anything to do with you and *that* is why you are here.
