Tattoos and Geekiness... do they mix?
Baron Grim Posted Feb 13, 2006
There's a bit of THGTTG in one of my tats.
I only have two and they're both original designs I did. The one on my inner bicep is of and "evil idea". It's a lightbulb with devil horns and and a sort of smiley face. But he has his two arms up. Originally I designed the arms like those on the smiling green planet on the original book and game covers I (US edition) (see here for similar logo http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/fc/ae/093292c008a0ded910d31010.L.jpg )
The design was for myself and a friend and he had me change just one thing. Now the hands are giving a very rude gesture with the middle fingers on both hands. This was taken from a scene in Rob Zombie's first slasher movie, House of 1000 Corpses where some armed robbers tell Captain Spaulding to put his hands where they can see them.
My friend knows nothing about Hitchhikers but is sporting ink with a hidden reference to it anyway.

I have a celtic cross tattoo (my webserver is down currently so I can't share it with you) that has a swirl very similar to the h2g2 logo and I toyed with the idea of getting the h2g2 logo tattooed more than once.
Mr. D. If you want the ink, get it. Be sure you respect the design that you get. All of mine are custom renditions. I believe that you really should put a lot of thought in to the tattoo and that you really feel that in 20-30-50 years you will still feel the same about the subject. I have an idea right now for a tattoo as a tribute to my father. I am not sure, yet, how it will turn out as I am still thinking about it.

I have never watched so much as a single episode.
Even with Pink Floyd I can't bring myself to get something so corporate done. I don't want to eventually tire of Pink Floyd and regret getting the ink. I decided at 8 that I was going to get a tattoo and it took me 18 years to figure out what that first one was going to be...

Sorry, didn't mean to click that button.
Now that I have acquired the number of ear piercings I intended to get, I plan to get inked. Not sure what it will be but it will be cool.
As for never having seen an episode of Dr. Who, doesn't compute for me either.

I think that tat would be really , Mr D.
Has anyone any experience of 'semi-permanent' tats? I'd quite like to get one but am worried I might change my mind later.

Never heard of them. If you are afraid of the pain of a regular inking I would not be. The sensation of the tattoo is half of why I like them...

Do you mean like the henna ones that last for about three weeks? I think they are a good idea to see if you feel comfortable with having one, before committing to having one forever

The pain of getting a tattoo is another thing that makes me think twice... not because I'm particularly scared of pain (although I can be a big girl's blouse sometimes) or needles but because I've yet to get a coherant report of what it actually feels like.

I had acupuncture yesterday - and the therapist told me about a client who'd refused acupuncture on the grounds that it would hurt (it didn't) - but was sporting a hug tat on one of his arms.

My sister says it stings at first but the sensation dulls as the needles work on.
I think that the seal would look fantastic.

Finally, a real answer to the pain thing! I've had so many people tell me things which either make little sense ("it's sort of like having really bad pins and needles but not"), or are bleedin' obvious but for which I have no frame of reference ("Well, it's like being poked with lots of needles").

I'll tell you exactly what it feels like on the upper arm. (Some other areas are obviously more sensitive... stay away from places close to bone if you are worried.)
Take a fingernail and scratch your skin pretty hard. You don't need to break the skin, just scratch it hard enough to really feel it.
It hurts a bit, but it's not that bad.
Now... the imagine keeping that up for an hour. (Depending on how big you get the tattoo and how much detail and colour.
I really expected it to hurt worse. Occasionally when the artist goes over previously inked areas to fill in shading it spikes a bit. But once he stops the pain eases quickly.
After that it's just sensitive.
Anyway, that's how it felt when I got mine.

I like to say that it feels like a dull knife point being dragged across your skin. That said I rather enjoy the sensation.

Weirdy...
That being said, I have heard people say that getting 'inked' (as you hip and groovy young hepcats put it) can be almost addictive.
Now I've had my mind put at rest about the pain factor I just need to decide on how big I want it to be.
