The Background.
One day, as he was busily working in the fungus-farm, Ant 3,000,003 heard an irresistable inner voice say to him, "Ant 3,000,003, put down your manure-shovel and brush, and go immediately to the Brain Room."
Although he knew this was forbidden, on pain of certain death, he put down his tools, and struggling against the ever-flowing tide of workers, forced his way higher and higher, towards the unknown upper levels of the hill. Soldier ants eyed him as he passed their checkpoints, but neither sprayed him with acid nor bit off his head. It seemed that some Higher Force was aiding him.
Eventually he reached the gleaming doors of the Brain Room, very close to the Queen, and where she perfected her expansion plans for World Domination. This was where each single egg was indoctrinated before hatching. Normally, this room was protected by Guard Ants standing shoulder to shoulder, looking from side to side in perfect unison, but today it was deserted, and as he came nearer the door slowly opened of its own accord.
"Come in, Ant 3,000,003" said a deep voice, that he recognised had been the Inner Voice he had heard earlier. He timidly looked round the door and stepped in. The room was full of dark-blue light, and empty except for a huge computer terminal. No-one sat before it. "Take the seat, Ant 3,000,003," said the voice. "This is your seat from now on. Tell the World everything you know about Fungus, and Manure-shovels, and the joys of Working All The Time. Educate them in the details of our Great Project. You have been chosen from the 500,000,000 to further the plans of our Great Queen, and to Civilise the World in the process. Justify our faith in you. Succeed, and your rewards will be Great. Fail, and, well. . . I don't like even to talk about it. The world is yours, Ant 3,000,003."
Filled with fear, the Chosen One seated himself in the chair and raised a trembling antenna to the screen. He hesitated, sighed, and then resolutely touched the button marked REGISTER.
The screen went blank, and he knew that it was already too late.
