Me
My name is Simon Rees. At school my rather unimaginative nickname was Reeser. I couldn't think of anything to use as a username and so put this down. God knows why, because school was bloody awful.
The thing that constantly amazes me about my grandparents generation is the sacrifices they had to make. How would people today behave if they had to give their all for six long years? Not very well I would imagine. I have met veterans - all brave in their own way. From those who won medals, to those who frankly admitted that they were scared to hell.
My family has, through the generations, served the Navy, the Army and the RAF. Many of my relatives paid the supreme price for freedom. Fortunately, in the last war all of grandparents survived. Sadly, my grandparents on my mother's side are now gone - but I remember their discussions on WW2 very vividly. My grandparents on my father's side are still here and they too have some fantastic memories to tell. I aim to write down both family stories here and perhaps someone will be able to take something from them.
Anyway, I'm so pleased that the BBC is doing something to remember their efforts and sacrifices. Unlike the politicians, who seem intent on making the lives of war pensioners impossible.
PS Further ramblings can be found on my journal!
