It ain't called Skelmanthorpe

EARTHDWELLER

There are lots of ways of spelling it on your site but not the usual four letter one. I don't know the origins - probably that most locals can't string three syllables together - but the local name is Shat. Yes, that's another thing you can mention in a pub when the conversation grinds to a halt.

There's a little sign next to the cricket club which says "welcome to Shat". Which is nice, innit?

Actually, I think I might have a picture of it somewhere. Not online though, but if you fancied having a picture of sunny Skelmanthorpe, it's at http://www.mediauk.com/crid/skelmanthorpe.htm

(Doh! Just realised that's how you saw the pictures anyway. Whoops.)

Did you see the double page aerial shot in the Examiner a few weeks back. It also explained the origins of the name 'Shat'. Apparently some 16th century warlord recruited his army from Skelmanthorpe because they were the toughest around the area. He called his men 'Shatters' and so the village became known as Shat.

I did see that, actually, thanks. I'll go and change the thing.
