I'm here to help you round the magical maze of h2g2 (fondly known by researchers as hootoo), and to help start you off, I've created a little list of links, just for you, so click here A1159210 and have a look at them when you have time.

If you click on each link, they will take you to parts of hootoo so sane person should ever go.....

......but seems as no-one here is sane, it doesn't matter does it!

Have a look around, and don't be afraid to jump in on conversations, hootooers don't bite (well, some of them do, but I'll steer you well clear of those )

Remember, if you get lost, just keep turning left and you'll eventually get back to the beginning. Failing that, just click on MY SPACE on the left hand side of your screen and you'll get back to your personal space.

ooh, while i think of it: could you tell me the difference between a conversation post (seen in "my conversations") and a message (seen in "my messages")? they look identical to me.

We're all really friendly here (well most of us)

As for your lists that you see.....you have 2 conversation lists...

The top is is a list of ALL the conversations you are involved in (ie, when you come across someone elses conversations and you talk in it, whereas the other list is where people actually leave messages for you.

Once you get used to surfing hootoo, you'll find that you'll have far more conversations in your top list than your bottom list......

one more question (before i actually contribute somethnig useful ):
while having a look around i came across a line on someone's user page inviting me to stop lurking and post something. which is sound advice but i was wondering, was that something particular to that user or is it something that happens automatically?

Everybodies personal space is completely different.....some people don't have anything in it, whereas others write an essay

You can leave a message for absolutely anyone you like....if you come across them in a conversation and want to speak to only them, then leave them a message.

If this researcher has this invite in their personal space - by all means, leave them a message!

I can see that you don't have anything written down in your personal space.....perhaps you could come up with something to write in it.

You can put what ever you want in there, as long as it doesn't break house rules.
