.. another gentoo user. glad to see I'm not the only one. 
.. tried the ppc variant? I'm debating switching to an apple for my next laptop purchase, once my 2.2Ghz p4 starts not to be quite so swish any more. Of course, I would have to be running gentoo

Long time no me on h2g2... anyway.
Not tried Gentoo PPC although I know someone who uses it on his iBook G4 and it seems fine. I personally wouldn't want to run anything other than Mac OS X on my Powerbook - seems a bit silly to pay all that money for an Apple and then not take advantage of its lovely OS.
Of course, if you don't like OS X, Linux is a perfect backup choice, and Gentoo a most fine choice of distro
