Ball Lightning!
Posted Mar 28, 2004
We saw ball lightening in the middle of our lounge last night. It was bright blue/white, about the size of a pea, and only lasted a second or so, exploding, in a pop/phutt (like a spark from a wood fire), to about the size of a hand. It appeared to be stationary.
This was followed immediately by lightening outside. The initial flash of a series of three close ones. The second and third strikes tripped the house main fuse (the third also must have tripped a grid fuse plunging the local village and surrounding houses into temporary darkness)
All four of the family saw it, about 5 metres from where we were sitting. The dogs, including the one asleep more or less directly underneath, totally ignored it.
It was not near anything electronic. The nearest metal object was a brass ornament. It was more or less in the centre of the room, about 1.25m from the floor.
The district supply line runs across around 150m away from the house.
This phenonomen is said to be rare!
Meanwhile it looks like I'm going to have to write some more entries!
Alcobaça and Until the End of Time having gone to the subs. That only leaves Lagos and Philippa in PR.

Everybody will have to wait a bit for a new one, as there is some w**k to be done in return for instant €€€€€€€'s - which will be taking up most of my online time!
The J.R.'s are finding the Cocker Spaniel very interesting at the moment - if we let them get together we could have one or two Jack Spaniels!
