Just a thought, but wouldn't the forum structure of h2g2 allow for chess games to take place? I mean, two users could post their moves to a specified forum, and then, when the oponant is online they can find it, chack it, and reply with their move. A bit like postal or email chess, but open to spectators
Any thoughts people?

Quite a nice idea Pastey...but I have a feeling that the *spectators* wouldn't be able to resist joining in!

Ah, but that's the joy of having your user name on your posting, that way nobody could pretend to be you
I guess that somepeople would try and suggest moves, but the majority of people who can play chess are a little more grown up than that

I have to admit, I'd kinda like to try this. I haven't had a game of chess in a couple of years
Not that I was ever any good at it

I'm pretty awful at chess too(lack of concentration ) so I'll play the loser!
I'm sure though, that an online game between 2 reasonable players would an interesting thing to watch.
How would it happen graphically? Just curious.

I suppose there are a couple of ways it could be done.
1) The easiest would be to use the 'ole QB2 - KN5 sort of quatations, but I was never any good at those
2) Bit more difficult, set up a Guide page with a picture of a board and a library of pictures of the pieces and code them graphically, which is a lot more hassle.
3) There may even be a program out there that does it for us
I'm not sure, I'd have to look.

Me or rather Demon Drawer would quite like the idea of an H2G2 chess league.

Wait, wait, wait... that's not entirely true... one day I was editing a friend's page and I used a *certain* html editor which actually showed the edit page button, something that shouldn't have shown up. It should only happen if the cookies are on your computer, but apparantly there are ways around that... I think it is a bit faulty, but still a good idea

We also have the games room at the circle Wowbagger...but that isn't quite the same as making it into a spectator sport here at h2g2
