The how somebody set up a page, and invite anyone interested to sign up, I'm sure Peta will help advertise it, then when you have some numbers draw the games and each of the games takes place in a forum or something like that.

Agreed...but what would be really good would be able to make it pictorial... so that anyone visiting the page could see how the game was developing Maybe we should go and ask Kasparov how he did it

Howdy
The shockwave programme wouldn't really work I'm afraid
But, I've written a little JavaScript programme that puts a chess board on a screen and allows you to move the pieces about. Now I've just got to figure out a way of getting it to save the move to the h2g2 page

It would seem that the only way to do this graphically, that I know and am capable of doing, would be to set up a userhome page and have the two players both log in as the same person, to this page.
I can set up the coding for the page so that they just have to lick buttons to move pieces and the page will refresh and update, but for the coding to work, the players both need to have authorisation to access and edit the page. Which is why they'd need to log in as such.
It could be done in a similar way as we've currently got the Post set up. One researcher name, but a few people knowing the login email and password.
If somebody wanted to play chess, then they'd just have to let us know and we could email out the login password thingy.
I could add a password security thing to each game I suppose, just to make sure that there is no player cross over.
I'll look into this, and shuold hopefully still have a working model today

Very droll Shazz
okay, I said I'd have a working model by tonight, and I do. But it's not an internet ready one yet Unfortunatly my brother turned up in Ipswich without any prior warning, so that was my whole afternoon gone. And I ran into a couple of glitches. But, the good news is, the structure is now in place, the theory is sound (for once) and I think I know how it will work.
It will be graphical, as I've found a way to update a user page without haveing to bother writing any code for it The downside is that each player will have to log out of h2g2 and then log back in as a Chess Player. That way they'll have authorisation to edit the pages, although in fact all they'll have to do is click a few buttons to make their moves.
The programme I've done does not check to see if a move is a legal one, it does not (at the moment) check to see whos go it is either, but it will do, just give me time It won't check for move legality as that's a biggy and I'm only doing this in JavaScript
I'm going to try and get something up tonight, we'll have to see, although I think it will probably be tomorrow afternoon before I've got anything workable up there

Well, the page is set up But there's not anything there yet, but that's where things will be, but I'll still be posting progress here as it were.
So, progress at the moment? Well, the grid, or rather board is set and so is the array that tells where the pieces are. The code to move a piece in in place and I'm now working on the code that asks you to confirm the move and then updates the page.
Once that is done, I'll set it up to recognise two different players and to post the moves log into a forum
Oh the fun

Ummm, someone will have to explain them to me. I never use them when I play, just hte bog standard set, then there's no arguements over intrerpration of them

Demon Drawer Posted Mar 2, 2000
But they are an intrigal part of the game for development and end play.

Chess Player Posted Mar 2, 2000
Aye, but I don't know them If you can explain them clearly enough for an idiot like me to understand, then fair enough

Castling is the move where a King which hasn't yet moved moves 2 spaces along the back rank towards a rook, providing there are no pieces in between, and the King is not in check, moves through check, or ends up in check obviously, then the castle comes around to the square the king passed over.
En Passent. Only can happen on the move after a pawn has started with a two square advance. If after ending up adjacent to a square on which another pawn sits having moved forward two squares, on the next move and for the next move only, that pawn has the option of taking the pawn as if it had only advanced the one square in a conventional diagonal taking move.
If you need more info, just shout.
