Ooh, look at that - one thread and I've already introduced a new word to the English language... thanks to Terri, of course.

Thanks everyone for all the ! It really does work, you know.
Kea, there's been a general lack of presents, cool or otherwise, as I'd advertised the fact that people didn't have to give me anything, and that in fact I'd prefer not to be given things. It turns me into a stammering mess, you see. The exceptions were my mother's topping-up of my bank account (she knows that my finances are always a bit dodgy), and my ex's voucher for a rather good bookshop, and a fair amount of .
Dale, I'll leave a message for you on your space.

I hope it's never too late to say Happy Birthday. Sorry I missed it, but have only checked my emails for days. Had a head and chest full of cold and felt dreadful.
Could do with a but not with what I'm taking!!
Very glad to hear you are still smoke free
Just in case you still need a have one on me.
Done the essential chores the rest will have to wait. Thought I was much better this morning till I started doing things

Thanks, Websailor.
I think it's never too late to wish someone a Happy Birthday; if they like, they can save it for their next one...
And might I recommend lots of steam, and possibly some eucalyptus-vapour as well? That usually helps with Vicious Colds.

I'm sorry I was slacking on your birthday and missed it. So Happy Belated.
I heard someone started up a quit smoking page or group or club here. I'm not sure where it is now. I'll post a link here if I come across it again if you're interested.

Abbi, I'm feeling fine now. A little tired, perhaps, but that's no problem.
HBFJ - Thanks. I've noticed rather a lot of people trying to quit smoking, but I haven't made it to the central quitting-page yet. I was thinking of looking for it tomorrow... I certainly won't get there tonight - either my connection's rubbish or hootoo's unstable.

Hi Ivan and Abbi,
Thanks for advice and kind words. Will do. Other half has it now so Xmas looks like being a bundle of fun He's hit the steroids as a precaution, so hopefully will be better quicker than me.
Glad you are still smoke-free Ivan, - actually that sounds like me at the moment
Take care all, Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year, just in case I don't get back to you in the next day or two. Got a lot of catching up to do

Merry Christmas (or personal equivalent), everyone!
I thought I'd mention it now, as I'm likely to forget later...
I am indeed still smoke-free, not to mention skoe-free, and I'm getting a lot of gardening done as I'm trying to keep busy, so all the by-product is being put to good use.

Hi, Ivan,
Thought I would just check in and see if you had survived Xmas Day without need of a Hope you had a good time, and that the New Year is a healthy one for you.
I am still coughing well but otherwise much better. We had a cold Christmas Day, crisp and bright, with a sprinkle of snow late in the evening. Not enough for though. The ice was nearly half an inch thick on the bird baths etc. this morning and there is no sign of the snow disappearing. It is still bitterly cold but the sun is now shining, so it remains to be seen what the rest of the Xmas break brings us.
What's your weather like
(just in case)

Hi Websailor...
I've been sick as a duck over Christmas. I suspect it was sunstroke. Nothing to do with tobacco, of which I am *still* free.
I don't think I need more , but it's always handy to have one or two around the place - especially considering the amount of gardening I'm doing. (Mind you, that's how I got sunstruck. Life's like that.)
The last few days have been warm and sunny, about 35C; today we're expecting a cool change, and about 25C. It's 7:54am and about 18C I think; I've already done today's gardening stint. Soon I shall embark on today's lazing-on-the-couch stint. I'm looking forward to that.

Sunstroke???? Ivan You should know better than that And you're back out in the garden today
You do have a hat, right?

Hi, Ivan.
It is freezing here and somehow I cannot imagine sunstroke in December. I know it was hot in Perth, Au. when I spoke to rellies the other day. Could do with a bit of it here - not much, mind as I cannot stand really hot weather.
Happy New Year, and like Frenchbean says "where's yer 'at". I thought "slip, slap, slop" or is it "slop" on the suncream, "slap" on the hat and "slip" into a T-shirt, was all the rage in Australia - or has it been forgotten. Well, whatever it was you get my drift
Hi, Frenchbean - how you doin'? I hope you are having a good Christmas in spite of your disappointment, or are you just clearing out, packing and getting ready for your big adventure in the new year Is it as cold up there as it is here in the Midlands? We had a sprinkle of snow yesterday evening and it is still here, and I think freezing again.

I *was* wearing a hat... I have a few hats; there's a floppy straw hat for casual gardening, and a panama for more formal gardening and outdoor events, and visits to the botanic gardens and suchlike... I think the problem the other day was that I was gardening next to the driveway, and I probably copped the radiant heat from the concrete, coming up under the hat. I didn't have a lot of choice with the timing, even though I'd sooner have waited for a cooler day. That's the problem with the current water-use restrictions here - if it's a day and time at which I'm allowed to garden, I need to make the most of it.
As for the sunscreen - always, if I'm to be out in direct sunlight for more than 5 minutes. A shirt - always, but that's mostly on aesthetic grounds. I trust the neighbours appreciate my consideration for their view of the world.

One more week, and I will have finished two entire smoke-free months! I'm starting to think in terms of rewards...
I decided a while ago that the best thing I could do for myself would be to ditch this dial-up connection and go for Broadband. There's been a slght revision to this; I'll let myself have Broadband from February, or maybe March. The money I would have spent on arranging the connection for a January start... well, I've just given that to the Red Cross. It's just a drop in a very big and empty bucket, I'm afraid.
(Frenchbean, thanks for the inspiration. )

They might yet get more out of me... I've been a bit careless with spending lately; I might try to rein in some of the sillier expenses and send them the savings (or some part thereof).

Oh, Ivan, Fb too,
You are lovely. h2g2 has restored my faith in human nature. I have encountered such callous, apathetic attitudes from some people regarding this monumental disaster that I could despair. The comments about giving almost stopped me from doing so.... for a second
Fb, you are right, drops in buckets, or drips in baths, eventually fill them. Whether you are a *drip* or a *drop* you can make a difference
When I can find the right words I shall put a Journal entry up. At the moment I am too upset at the smug attitudes of some people of my acquaintance. "I'm alright, Jack" would be an understatement, and that is not from people with no cash to spare
