Yep! Tsarina youve hit it bang on there
Unless life in the R.N. has changed a lot over the past 30 years, but I can recall doing many things that a woman could not do
Ah! well, not my problem, Im well out if it now
Smudger,

Equal opportunity is all well and good as long as both sexes are capable of carrying out the jobs equally! In the armed forces, specially on active duty, I would imagine the guys would want to 'look after' the girls and that just isn't possible under combat conditions!
Think I've ranted on enough now better get off my soap box
How long did you serve Smudger?

*Women, the weaker sex.* Well not always... Women are beter suited to be a fighter jet pilot than men. Shorter, better fat distribution helps with blood flow in high gravity situations. No "red out" effect. Yet look at the small numbers of how many even know to apply.
WRENs - "short trips" yeah, I thought they did the 'taxi service' from ship to shore, as part of their duties. The women on war-ships not being WRENs, just crew?

I meant physically weaker as in lifting carrying and being able to manhandle heavy objects! In that sense we are weaker - plain biological fact!
As for being better fighter pilots - will have to take your word for it on that one I'm afraid but am sure you're probably right
Not sure about the 'wrens' thing either but have a friend who's a royal navy clearance diver so I could pick his brains I guess!

Yes its a biolgical physycal strength, just unseen, untested for in the past; a pilot being "a mans job" and all that.
Women may not build up the same muscle mass, but some women get very strong from doing physical work. There are jobs that anybody need be fit and strong to do. Maybe women have the sense not to try things that will kill them?

Hi Tsarina , I did 6 years in the R.N. Two of which were on board HMY Britannia, but my now Ex wife moaned about me being away all the time
As regards women on the "front line" the Russians had a lot of women as fighting soldiers during ww2,
In fact I saw a doccy on TV recently, where it said thay had over 2 thousand trained as snipers!
They were even better than some of the men, due to their patience!
They have been prven to be better TIG welders than men, out in the middle East, as TIG is an intricate form of welding requiring two hands!
As far as being on board a fighting ship? well I think that the men would feel compelled to shelter them, thus distracting them from their own duties

Why lucky you!!
I wish I'd been there!!!!
We have a female bin-lady in Antrim and she empties the bin as well as the men, she's young and quite good-looking so I have to admit that I was suprised that she was doing that job in particular....but each to their own.
P.S. Can I come and live near you?? Nothing like that ever happens here.
