Bassman - Funny how people never ceases to amaze me! Started conversation May 12, 2005
Hi,
I saw your plea for a deep and meaningful conversation, so I thought I'd drop by and attempt to start one.
That's a conversation killer if ever I heard one.
I can be a bit of a night-owl myself, I do 4 days 4 off 4 nights 4 off although I don't get too many opportunities to sit in front of the puter these days, so you may have to be a bit patient with me if I take ages to reply

who says I meant 'deep and meaningful'
Don't worry about taking your time to get back to me Am only here when I'm at work anyway and this is my last shift until Monday now I do have a pc at home but it's very slow and using hootoo drives me nuts so tend not to log in!

That's a shame. At home my internet browser is knackered - it keeps stopping for no apparent reason.... Computers - who'd have em?
It's my last shift 'till Wednesday days. I work away from home and I came down on my motorsickle this week, so I'm looking forward to a rapid - if not cool ride home tomorrow. Don't panic, I'm going to get a bit of kip before hand, it's a 2 hour ride.
My band are out playing tomorrow night, last time before our biggest gig of the year at the BMF Memba Rally in Peterborough, should be 6000 + punters, how is that?

Surely you're only as old as the man you feel?!?!?!
I saw a bumper sticker on a car once that said; "If I knew grandchildren were so much fun, I'd have had them first."
I hope the same is true for you when the time comes. I'm sure you'll love it.
The gig was fantastic. We were a little anxious about what would happen on the day. We'd been booked as the headline act some months before, but on the BMF's web site, we were second on the bill. The headline act were now a blues band that featured a guy that played with Jethro Tull many years ago (who as it turned out was a truely wonderful chap).
Putting our slight bemusement aside, we started the sound check in a business like manner, when half of his band appeared at the top of the ramp up onto the stage and told us that they thought we'd be a more fitting band to play the last slot. We certainly aren't as accomplished musicians as they were, probably not even close, (except our keyboard player maybe). I think at the end of the day, those guys are professionals and it matters not to them, when they go on, as long as they earn a fair day's pay, for a fair day's work. I don't think collectively we've reached that level of maturity yet. I hope it was a lesson to all of us.

If the adage about being as old as the man you're feeling is true, then I'm certainly ageless at the moment ......not feeling any man
Am sure when the time comes, I'll be as doting as the next grandparent, but it's a bit of a daunting prospect at the moment......I have a daughter of 18 and a son 14 still at home and am still busy being a parent, let alone a granny! Still, it will be nice to be able to hand him/her back when baby sitting duties etc are finished
Sounds like the gig was fun.....I remember Jethro Tull, used to like them too! Ian anderson was the lead singer I think and played the flute too? I learnt to play the oboe up to grade 8 standard when I was at school and did music O' level too so am classically trained in a way I guess, but it's been a long time since I've done anything musically Never seem to have the time these days and don't have an oboe anymore anyway! It got sold a long time ago when ready cash was needed......we all get those times don't we?
Catch up with you again soon I hope

Deep and meaningful can also be light and lively. It all depends on where one is on the swing of the pendulum. Humor can be deep, which if this is the case has the tendency to be meaningless. A meaningful conversation can therefore be not as deep as it is humorous. At night I'm sure an owl would rather have light and lively than deep and meaningful. Let's take a small field mouse for that matter. Light and lively. An old Budhhist monk told me this long ago, "The owl sees the field then the mouse." Now let me ask you, is that deep and meaningful enough. DH46

Oh, I apologize for that last interuption. I'm new to h2g2 and am feeling my way around through life, everything and the universe. You were talking ... er, rather...chatting about old age, becoming Gurand Parents and gurandchildren. I thought I was in the Nature chat room chatting up about owls and giving a hoot about deep and meaningful field mice and Budhhist monks. Please forgive. It must be an senelity episode or one of those recurring flashbacks I've had since Woodstock. You see, I too am this side of over the hill. DH46

No need for apologies.....it's always nice to meet someone new (or old for that matter) and welcome to the wonderful and diverse world of h2g2 (hootoo to most)
Having browsed your personal space briefly, I'm assuming that you hail from across the big pond somewhere and that it's probably still daylight or perhaps evening time where you are? Here in deepest Wales it's just past 4.33am and another 3.5hrs of a very long shift to work
You'll be relieved to know that you won't need to show me what a tree looks like as I live on the edge of a forestry and am surrounded by hundreds of them and have the pleasure of a stream tumbling by as well

Once again, no need for apologies, we all had to start somewhere and you've just made two new friends - welcome aboard.
It's no secret where I live, it's just nice to be asked once in a while, it makes me feel that people are gunuinely interested. I live in a small place called Ellistown, just the other side of the M1 from Leicester. I'd send you a pic, if you send me your e-mail addy by using the "E-Mail Bassman" button on my page.
Where abouts in Wales? I'm slightly familiar with the Wye Valley, the area surrounding Abergaveny and a bit round Mold!

Oh, my. I did have to hit the sack for this side of the Dave Ocean it was onwardly late. I'm sorry to have missed your replies. I like the idea of having aquaintences from another universe. It might as well you know, that is be from another universe. Sometimes It's pretty tough being a Yank 'specially with the rep we had, have and getting. But still there's far worse in this world. So as for us being friends...er,well...long distant friends...we will be just hootooers to each other. I will send photo as well as soon as I can figure out how to find e-mail-dresses. Later on, my new found friends. Have a good time. DH46

I live just outside Cardiff going west towards Bridgend.....a little place not far from the Royal Mint! I work right in the centre of Cardiff opposite the Millenium Stadium! It's a pain in the proverbial when there's a big match on cos they close all the roads around the stadium and we can't get in to park our cars in the company car park .......
Have tried your Email link on your PS but it's not working......this could be down to the work pc tho rather than your page!
If you want to see a pic of me.....go to www.faceparty.com/tsarina and you'll find a couple of pics there My PC at home is sick and I can't access the internet at the moment so can't send any pics out sorry
DH46......I never judge a book by it's cover.....am friends with anyone and everyone until they prove otherwise......there's good and bad in all nations and we Brits ain't exactly flavour of the month right now either

Thought I lost you among the many other entries and replies and posts. Was beginning to have an anxiety attack. Not really. But glad I found where you were hiding. Not sure if I should verify my e-mail-dress in this post. That's just my worries of identity theft. Though it is in my profile. I will try your site as given in your last message. I've always had a close attachment with the Brits- being a partial one in blood. I got my name from my father and his mother named him the same after the first Royal Navy sailor killed in WWI (Sterling).
Going to site now. Later on, my friend. DH46

This side of Dave's Ocean (see Salmon of Doubt by DNA) is getting on into the very high eighties- that's farenheit. I never could figure out why some countries go by centrifuge or whatever it's called...cellualous? Meters and feet and miles and kilos...give or take a foot. But we're definately in for a very long hot summer and here in Florri-dah it means up until mid_October. The Gulf of Mexico becomes one huge bacteria, stingray infested sauna. And you can't go take a dip in any local pond or chill out in any stream what with the snakes, alligators and hippos. Okay, I lie about the hippos- none in Florri-dah as far as I know. Summers are...i guess you can say... hot like Africa. Still no hippos though.
Do you swim a bit in your local lakes, rivers or nearest coastline?
Hey, I'm off to the sack now. Time is 1 AM on this side of the galaxy.
Thanks for the chat. Later on soon and have a good time. DH46

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I spent 2 weeks in florida about 7 yrs ago around about February time, so it was reasonably cool and pleasant We did however, have a tornado warning just before we left but flew out before the worst hit!
We did the obligatory Disney thing with the kids and spent a week in Orlando and then a week at the coast in Clearwater! Out of the two, I much preferred Clearwater.....Orlando was sheer hard work as far as I was concerned We went to Crystal river and went swimming with the Manatees, which was a wonderful experience and never to be forgotten Funnily enough, I didn't see any hippos there either ......I did see some when we went cruising down the Zambezi river in Zimbabwe tho! I lived in Africa for 4 yrs in the early 80's
Swimming in the sea around our coasts is a very chilly experience and not for the faint hearted, the water never really gets very warm The water quality is nowhere near as good as the seas around Florida either.....as for swimming in the local lakes and rivers................no thanx
Sleep well and sweet dreams I have just under 2 hours left to work and then I'll be heading home to bed too
Bye for now...............

I'm truly glad you and your family enjoyed your holiday in Florida. It does have so much for the tourists and natives as well. The natives in Florida are called 'crackers'. This handle was given to the cattle herdsman, BACK IN THE 1800S, who used bullwhips to gather their stock and guide the herd to market or back to where ever they were supposed to be at and not roaming around the palmetto fields at will. Cows don't have will nor do they have a last testimony. The sound of the bullwhip makes a cracking sound, hence 'crackers'. I'm a regulator. One who comes to Florida frequently or on a regular basis and then decides to relocate here because he likes the weather much better than back home. My old home being New York. No, not the city. But I have spent many a splendid time in the Big Apple. I love NYC.My home was out on Long Island. I've been in Florida for the passed 25 odd years- and believe me they were sure odd ones at that. One day I hope to be a cracker. No, not really. I emz whut I emz.
Hey, I wonder where Tsarina went off to. I hope I didn't disrupt your chat with her. Helen are you there?
Did you sleep splendidly? What's wrong with your computer? Yeah, right. Like I could do anything to assist you from here. Quantum leap or tea?
Have a good time. DH46

I tried checking out the site with your pics on, but the server at work wouldn't let me Bah - humbug!!
I used to live right up in the North of Scotland, the water there was fine and clear, the beaches were of golden sands that stretched further than the eye could see (almost....) You wouldn't ever risk a toe in the water for the fear of severe frost-bite, even in summer.
I remember quite vividly the way the wind used to blow along the coast as well - one too many cross country runs up the beach into the wind, then back in and out of the dunes, so no wind to help you on your back.
Currently, I live almost as far from the sea as it's possible, in mainland Britain, give or take 7 or 8 miles. I rode my bike down to Weston Super Mare this weekend, to visit my girlie. She was acting in a murder mystery event, which was a hoot. I didn't get to see the sea though.... so close.... and yet so far!
