Thanks for the link to the Oxford church, Ben (way way back there in the altelier backlog. Has it really been three weeks?).

If I might ask, how did your grandmother come to convert to Russian Orthodoxy. It's not the most obvious church to convert to (so I'd have thought...)

How are you anyhoo?

I am much better now that the Stepson has moved out down the road, thanks, SOl. I am sitting here, in the peace and quiet, and the loudest sound is the tapping of the keys. Bliss.

I don't know why she converted to Orthodoxy rather than Catholicism. I do remember that she regarded Catholics as spurious upstarts, so maybe the rationale was to get to an early and unbroken line of tradition. There aren't that many Coptic churches around, and even fewer in the 60s, I assume.

It has vastly enriched my upbringing, though. I recommend ecumencially unconventional godparents.

My mother has all that covered: she is a dedicated follower of ecuenicalism, so I still have a tendancy to forget that I'm Anglican and We Don't Do That.

I suspect B and your grandmother would get on. That's pretty much what he says about Catholocs. Funnily enough, he doesn't mind us protestants half as much. I suspect it is because we are soooo beyond the pale.

Glad you have your peace and quiet back!

Yes, I think that is my godmother's reaction too!

If you go there, let me know. I can email her details and let her know that you are going. She is my godmother, not my grandmother, but never mind that.

It is good to have you back on hootoo.

Godmother. There go my reading skills again. smiley - blush

If we end up in Oxford at some point we shall definitely check it out. Unfortunately we are seemingly unable to both make it even as far as my parents at the moment. I suspect we shall not be trecking far until B has a permanent job: difficult to make plans... Still, B subscribes to the I am religeous even though I never go to church school of thoought, so I shall mentally put us down as congragationalists anyway.

Good to be back!

My godmother has given me the website address of the Russian Orthodox Church in Britain: http://www.sourozh.org which should help tracking a church down. She has also said, if you decide to go to Oxford, to make yourselves known to her. If you do go there, let me know, and I will put you in e-communication with each other.

Super! Cheers again, and thank your godmother for her kind offer, which will be taken up the moment we decide to go there. I shall have to ask my Mum about the Oxford church (she is very eccumenical and has Connections with the orthodox church). Now I think about it, it may have been that preist who offered to do a joint marriage service with the Anglicans for me and B.

Actually, we've found out there is another Orthodox community in London. They are not on speaking terms with the one near here, which is delightful. We shall have to check them out too. But I suspect it might suit B very well to belong to a congragation of a church which he never goes to, so...!
