Hello Angel,

Right, as I’m a bit late getting these massages you’ve probably already sorted the problems. If so, just tell me to shut up…

Question 1: No you can’t. If you open the drive for your memory stick and minimise it into the taskbar, and then try dragging something onto the taskbar icon thingy all it will do is re-open the window again, and then you can drop your file in. The window WON’T stay minimised.

Question 2:

I guess this one could have a possible 3 or more answers really. Although what I’m about to say don’t think I’m classing you as stupid, because I’m not, I’m just pointing out the possibilities okay?

1. You may have copied a shortcut rather than the source file. You probably know this already, but if you have a program icon and it has a little arrow in the bottom left-hand corner, that is a shortcut to the main file. If you copy that and move it to another computer, the shortcut won’t work because the file it’s linked to is still on the other computer.
2. It may not be able to open the file because the software for that particular file isn’t installed on that computer. E.g. If you have Microsoft Word on you old pc, and transfer a Word document to another computer, that computer will also need Microsoft Word installed to open the file.
3. The file may well be corrupt.

If none of that makes any sense LBP, just tell me to get lost, and I’ll crawl back under me stone and shut up.

ok so if i dont want to copy the shortcut icon then where is the main file for me to drag into it ?
the document i copied was a single document in the my documents folder and how can it be corrupt

are you fed up with me yet ??
i think it was windows defender that brought my computer down how spooky is that ??

First of all, does the document open on your old pc?

And has it got a little arrow in the bottom left hand corner?

NO I'm not feb up with you at all - if I can help I'm glad to honest. smiley - smiley

God I use windows defender, hope it doesn't do that to mine as well smiley - yikes

the document does open in this pc cos this is the one i created it on and only this week too it doesnt have a little arrow tho but then neither do any of the others - tell you what is really spooky bout windows defender - i had it installed for about 2 months and was really happy with it - then when i booted up the windows tune was all sorta crackly and didnt play right - this was just before it fell over - i thought it was my speakers - anyhoo when i reformatted i re installed windows defender and it started to pop up and tell me that applications to change stuff had been made but it was always its self ( if you know what i mean ) anyway yesterday the music started to go off again and stuff was slow so i just thought i would uninstall it and see what happened and lo and behold the music is fine and the pooter has gone back to quick so i can only assume that something wasnt quite right with it

Scrap that then... I also use Spybot search and dsestroy, and ad-aware, both are free and both are brilliant, I've had no throuble with either of those. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with Windows defender anyway, and hardly ever use it. I think the two I just mentioned are better.

Now, this document, you created it on you new pc, then put it on the memory stick and moved it to your old pc is that right. Or was you just trying to access it while it's still on the stick?

And also what type of file is it?

yep i want to put it on the old pc - its a letter and it has .wps after it which i guess is the fact that it was created on "works " the old pc has works on it so that shouldnt be a problem

Ok, so if both computers have the same version of Works it should work unless the file is corrupted in some way. It hasn't got a little arrow, so it's not a shortcut, what you need to do now then is let me know what the message says that you keep getting. smiley - erm

Otherwise, you can open the document on your new pc, copy and paste all the content into a blank document, and the re-save it and see if that works.

ok i am off to do it now
so if i want to put my emails and addys onto the memory stick to save in case i lose everything do i have to do it individually - saving them / it to my docs or can i save the whole lot in one go ?

ok it says

" works cannot open c/documents and settings/anne/desktop/extra.wps
the file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed file converters or the file maybe corrupt "

Well if you're using the same version of WORKS on both computers it should work, which to me sounds like the file is corrupt then.

Have you done the copy and past thing and saved a new copy yet?
