You Are Loved, Njan!
the Shee Posted Jan 25, 2002
Naw, it was a line from "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by some lady... Some famous book, but I don't remember much more of it than that line..

njan (afh) Posted Jan 25, 2002
Ah, I see.
I paste / use lyrics a lot. They're all over my personal space... (you might have noticed)

COOL weekend!
Whaddya need a radio operator for? :p
What you think of my personal space?
How are you?
You Are Loved, Njan!
the Shee Posted Jan 28, 2002
I like your space! (I don't like that it yells at me for looking at your code... ) Mine is going to change again pretty soon...
I'm never quite happy with it. *sigh*
A radio operator for? To comment on my entry, of course! And if I could find one who is from the UK or somewhere else in Europe, that would be nice... Then we could expand the entry to cover more than just *US* ham radio...
I am tired. And so full of music I think I might ~pop~!
You Are Loved, Njan!
njan (afh) Posted Jan 28, 2002
... thankyou!
S'ok, you can look at it. :p..
Aww... It is a bit boring, at present...
*nod*... I'm a radio operator... I come from the UK.. I'm not a ham radio operator, though.. I'm "in charge" (in the loosest, and most basic sense of the phrase: I just do slightly more work than anyone else, and not much more at that) of a signals troop, and as such am a radio operator.. *points at British army antiquated rucksack-sized PRC320s*
aww. *hands you a glass of warm milk*

the Shee Posted Jan 28, 2002
Milk?
I think I'll have to spend some time looking at people's spaces for some more ideas for my space... I like your colors.
Not quite what I'm looking for... Feel free to check it out, though...
You Are Loved, Njan!
njan (afh) Posted Jan 29, 2002
yeah! What's wrong with milk?
*nods*... thankyou! ... feel free to steal them if you want.
... just grab a HTML colour pallette and mix & match. Or go to web dot archive dot org and look at a cache of my page.... I've had a few sets of colours. You can nick any of them you want. :p
You're right. It's completely not my scene. I know nothing about ham radio.

the Shee Posted Jan 30, 2002
It tastes bad.
Kay then.
*yawns*
Sorry I wasn't on yesterday... Or really the day before... Eh, can't be helped.

Good I guess...
(*thinks clarinet, because no one else will talk it with her*)
Have you had any experience with synthetic reeds?
You Are Loved, Njan!
njan (afh) Posted Apr 6, 2002
hurrah!
No, but the word in the practice hall is that they're not that great.
although they all seem to have guarantees along the lines of "If you don't like it, we'll give you another", so I guess you can't technically go wrong. At worst, you'd just be eternally returning reeds.
I think it's probably the same as crystal mouthpieces. They're accoustically perfect, but the sound's too pure and generic: traditional (ie. rubber, for the most part) mouthpieces are much more esoteric, and have a much nicer sound (My mouthpiece has a large scratch inside it which, logically, should make it sound horrible, but I'm /sure/ it improves the tone, not that I'd advocate experimenting: I did it by accident. )

*laugh*
Yeah, I'm searching for something for the Eb clarinet... I can't keep the reed wet while I'm doubling, because usually I a) don't have time to put the cap back on, and b) the cap does very little to keep it moist. In one of my magazines, some guy recommended cut Bari* soprano reeds for a sopranino clarinet, saying that those are better than any other reeds for the Eb clarinet... So I'm going to try that and see if it works.
Just wondered if you had an opinion on synthetic reeds... I've heard that they aren't that good too, but I feel like I'm grasping at straws for this!

You could try something along the lines of the trick often employed to keep cases moist...
...in order that wooden clarinets (and reeds) don't dry out, it has been known for people to put moist sponges (inside suitable water ((but not air)) -proof containers) inside cases to maintain the ambient moisture...
...if you /could/ put the cap back on, maybe you could try a similar trick inside the cap, in the space that there is there?
(or take the mouthpiece with cap on off and put it in a pocket, which is what I tend to do before I play, if there's a wait during which it's impossible to play, which keeps the mouthpiece and reed warm and to some extent moist)
*thinks*

To take off the mouthpiece and put it in a pocket, I think, would take too much time... (Not to take it off, but to put it back on... Especially because it's just been re-corked and I've got to grease it a lot every time or it sticks too much.)... Nice idea though.
Hrm... as for a sponge in the cap (this is sounding terrible )... I dunno where to get one that would fit there (well, that is sounding worse *laugh*).

I have one that'd be perfect.. I use it to keep my screwdrivers in (since I have quite a large case, they rattle around unless they're either wrapped up in something, or stuck in something.. I tried sewing a pouch for them, but I can't sew, so I've stuck them in a sponge)
If you got a fine-pored sponge, you could easily cut it to shape with a razor blade or a scalpel...
I have that problem with both of my mouthpieces (because they're Selmers, and Selmer mouthpieces are quite wide-bored)... I've taken to taking the barrel and mouthpiece off when I change between A and Bb clarinet (which is actually better anyway, since it means I consciously and subconsciously check the tuning, and because it means I disturb my fragile ligature less)...
...have you heard what's happened to my Bb?
