Gnomon - time to move on

My brother was in for an operation. The last thing he heard before the anaesthetic took effect was "This man is having both removed, isn't he?"

smiley - biggrin

He was relieved to find himself still in one piece when he woke up.

8.11.2014 - Watching Runners

Under strict instructions not to do any exercise following my operation, I didn't do my normal Saturday morning 5k run for the first time in 27 weeks. I still went to the park to help and volunteer, though. After explaining that I was under doctor's orders not to operate any machinery, they decided I was the perfect candicate to time the 150 or so runners taking part.

Every year I go to church on Rembembrance Sunday, and though not quite feeling back to normal yet, today was no exception. (I must admit to being very critical when it comes to Remembrance services - I once went to a church that didn't mention that it was Remembrance Sunday and felt quite disgusted, and not only have I never gone back there again, I didn't give them any money in the offering either). It was a very moving service and made me realise how lucky I am, and that the inconvenience of a minor operation is nothing compared to what others have suffered.

Ah, the joys of being at home, all day every day...

So far I've signed for 3 parcels, had the Tesco shopping arrive, let the washing machine repairman in to stop it from leaking while the view out the window hasn't stopped raining...

Today it has taken almost 45 minutes to log onto h2g2, reminding me of why it is I don't generally do this from home.

But glad to see you doing the important but frustrating stuff that's hard to do without staying home.

Yes, it is still November, but I decided to watch an episode of the classic 1980s 'The Box of Delights' (based on the novel by John Masefield) with my son. I remember how enchanted I was with it when I was his age, and we watched it together last year, and I'm impressed how much of it that he remembers from last December, asking questions about which characters were wolves, when the boy was going to turn into an animal. He's hooked!

Today I not only went outside, but actually to the town centre. I've not been to the town centre for ages, as I'm normally at work in the city during the week, and there's no real reason to go at weekends. So I browsed through all the local second-hand bookshops, and was delighted to spot an old book about the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's Terrier engines on sale for £1.
Soon after, though, I was horrified to discover that our local Waterstones book shop has closed, and is being replaced by a coffee shop. It was the town's only bookshop, and there's loads of places to buy a cup of smiley - tea at vastly inflated prices.
