As for the last question - answered it myself!

'This is a grave to Captain Markland, historian and Castle Custodian's dog.'

???? The dog is a historian?

I was using the Anglo-saxon spelling of Sandwich - spelling has changed quite a bit over the last thousand years or so - Southampton, for example, was then known as Hamwic.

Perhaps
"This is a grave to historian and Castle Custodian Captain Markland's dog." would make more sense. Captain Markland was teh historian, and as far as I know, the dog was not. smiley - dog

Cheers.

I raised the Sandwic(h) point knowing it was the AS spelling. However, elsewhere in the quotes you give the recent spelling so I have modified it accordingly.

Thanks for clarifying the dog!

'Settlements whose names end in 'ton', 'ton' or 'ham' all show '

What would you like to replace the extra ton with?

Tun.
One thing I noticed is that the Isle of Wight has been referred to as "the island" and not "the Island". This should be corrected, as it is incorrect to call the Isle of Wight "the island", just as it would be to call the Island "The isle of wight" or "the wight". Many Islanders consider it an insult if the Island is referred to as "the island", so I would definately change that.

About the I/i-sland thing, naturally no offence meant and I wouldn't change it without reason - I checked with BBC usage and Britannica and they are both small i.

However, having recieved your mail I checked some IoW pages and they are all cap I.

So it seems that we mainlanders use island and I(i)slanders use Island. I'm going to ask the rest of the subs/eds what they think, but suggest we run with yours as you're local!

Tis done - all caps now.

And AFAIAC the thing is finished - all of it - only 2 months late smiley - smiley

So please give it the final once over then I'll let the Italics know I've done.

Cheers for that. My advice is to do as Jane Austin advised in "Sense and Sensibility"
"...Talk of nothing but the Isle of Wight, and call it "The Island" as it there were no other in the world".
The world is full of little things like that which no-one could know without living there.
But thanks - I feel you've done a great job!

Interesting.

Well, just found out that it's your job to contact the Italics when I'm done so I'll leave that task to you!

It's been really interesting, and I've learnt a few things. Now I fancy a trip out to the Island for a look round.

smiley - cheers

I've put a comment in the conversation I had with Chris which started all of this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F42014?thread=130131 so hopefully that's enough. :-)

Thanks for your work, guys. I'll have a read through, then put the project in the queue for the Front Page - there are currently three others before you, but it shouldn't be too long. I'll let you know when it's due to appear. smiley - smiley

Thankyou.
Now I can start work on finishing off my next project "Dinosaurs Of The Isle of Wight", although I wouldn't want to inflict it on Konrad after such hard work and devotion to the Island's Anglo-Saxons smiley - winkeye
