House Rules
Posted Mar 17, 2001
Ok, I've read the House Rules and, apart from disagreeing with a few minor things (most of which other people have put up in the House Rules discussions), I agree with them. Or, to put it slightly differently I have no quarrel with them.
What I have issue with is the fact that they are EVERYWHERE.
At the bottom of every page.
At the top of every User Page.
At the side of every statement every person makes.
A tad overkill don't you think?
The last time I had rules floating so close to me so often was when I attended a Catholic High School. As a result, all I wanted to do then was to see if there was any way the rules could be broken. This is not a normal state of mind for me you must understand. But in the last couple of days I have felt exactly the same way that I did half a lifetime ago. I feel like a naughty school boy again.
Have the rules up sure, but accept that h2g2 is one of the friendliest and most civil discussion groups around. Treat people like school kids and that's how they'll act.

Baby Stuff
Posted Mar 16, 2001
If you were not previously aware, I and my lovely wife are expecting a child any minute now. The following information is provided to keep people... erm... informed.
The 'official' due for the kid was the 10th of March, but it seems that it's being tardy. Lots of boredom and frustration and discomfort is happening, mainly due to:
a) said tardiness; and
b) the fact that we have been prepared (home wise) for ages hoping that it was going to be early so now there's nothing to do but sit and wait.
Our Doc's said that, if it's not out by Tuesday the 20th she'll take matters into her own hands and get the kid out herself on the 21st.
My wife's birthday is the 20th. She'll be 30.
If nothing happens until then she''l be admitted to hospital the night of her 30th. Certainly an event to remember eh?
Otherwise life is tickety boo for us

Under Construction
Posted Jan 21, 2001
Do not adjust your set, I just feel like a change in scenery with my user page. The last one was nice enough, but every so often a spring clean is in order.
I'm in the process of studying all the new guide entries there are about creating user pages and will unveil the new look whenever I begin to understand the lingo needed to create these beasties, get together the motivation to build it and find the time to actually put all of this into practice.
So I suppose it'll be done by sometime next year .

Sydney 2000 Olympics opening ceremony
Posted Sep 15, 2000
Many theories were around as to how the olympic cauldron was to be lit.
My theory was that ex Prime Minister (lost-at-sea) Harold Holt would emerge from the ocean with flame in hand and light the cauldron and take his old job back immediately making John Howard unemployed.
Imagine my disappointment when it was Cathy Freeman.
This last statement is clearly not true considering the admiration I have for this woman, who has dealt with a lot of adversary in a very positive way
I thought the opening ceremony was great. It was probably one of the most multicultural Olympic openers I've seen. Choice image was of an Asian gentleman in an American style marching band playing a British tune at an Australian based Olympic ceremony. Without getting too much into the national pride thing, that's what I think this country's all about.
The fact that it was the centennial of female athletes almost made the ending write itself.
Hurrahs all 'round.
