MMM... I will take your advice and not patronize this damnable author. Thank you for the warning. Thank god someone else here talks about books. This is a website based on a book, so i figured maybe some literature conversation would arise.

I am wondering if you read the book with an open mind or did you make some
snap judgements after reading the first 2 chapters which clouded your reason?
I wonder at your contemptuous use of the term reader-pleasing.... It makes me
wonder if you don't somehow hold most 'readers' in contempt.I can accept that you do not
like the book and that is just fine, however, when you presume to question another
readers intelligence purely based upon your own prejudices, then that is most
certainly not OK.
It is my belief that Iain Banks is one of the most stimulating and exciting authors currently working
today. I would suspect, having read all of his books; Fiction and Science-Fiction,
that his prolific nature is not driven by pecuniary motives(which you imply) but rather by a strong belief
in his world-view.

From reading Banks' novels, you get a real feeling for the baser nature of man evident in the quotidien.
Read 'The Wasp Factory', a novel with a real 'sting in the tail'. He writes from a place that is uncomfortable
and will make you uncomfortable too. I think that there is a fine line between pornography and literature and
I believe that Iain Banks succeeds where someone like Brett Easton Ellis (American Psycho) fails.
