Florida Sailor All is well with the world

Hi bob, you have gotten me thinking about a few things.

First with a high definition camera, don't be afraid to take distant shots, you can zoom in on the computer quite far before you lose too much resolution, but it is impossible to zoom out on a close up. Of course experience will teach you the best distance for each shot.

Most of my practical photography, as opposed to fun shots of family and holidays, have been of buildings under construction. We measure the buildings with a tape measure, square and laser level (we used to use the old fashioned kind) I took a lot of these shots in the old 35mm days. When the 1-hour development shops opened I often stopped at the mall on my way home, had a quick meal or a few beers while I waited. The shops all had large picture windows that displayed the roll of prints going by before they were cut and placed into the envelopes. There would be strips from weddings, birthdays, holidays and then my roll would arrive with shots of half finished buildings, balconies and stairs with no handrails, open walls without drywall and all sorts of strange details I thought might be important. These days I usually have others measuring for me and the photos are vital for understanding their note and sketches.

I have not used filters in years, I used to have a half-dozen or so, but had forgotten they existed. One of the best effects I ever got (but I do not recommend anyone try this at home) was when my wife and I arrived in port after a cruise. The ship arrived before dawn and there was a light fog. I took several photos of the tug boats with their towing lights lit. When I got the prints the light, diffused by the moisture on my lens, made them all look surreal. This can't be good for the camera. I was using a 35mm parallax Minolta.

FWR mentioned colour, it might be worth mention that sepia tone, shades of tan and brown can make photo look historic, black and white is a little more modern. The film 'Shindler's List' was all shot in black and white, except for one sequence showing a young girl trying to hide from the Nazis. She wore a pink coat that that was coloured in each frame, it allowed the viewer to spot her in huge crowds and among the rubble. I will not tell how that worked out for here. The point is that in Photoshop etc a small use of colour can make certain items jump into the forefront.

I am not writing this in any particular order, or even inclusion unless you find something useful. I just thought I would share a few thought with the group, perhaps they might inspire someone else.
