2008 turned out to be a good year overall for me.

I got a new job which I enjoy very much; I left Dublin to be back closer to my kids; I walked the Kerry Way, raising over 2000 euro for charity in the process; I managed to be in the US during the election; I flew to the US in first class; I presented a paper at a conference; I climbed Ireland's highest mountain; I biked the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco; I turned 40; I finally got an iPod and I discovered podcasting; I was in Croke Park to see my team win a historic All Ireland Final, I received an award for my Master's thesis; I visited the biggest cruise liner in the world; I walked the Ballycotton cliffs and the mountains overlooking Killarney and I brought my youngest boys to school on their first day and helped them as they swam for the first time; I met new, wonderful people and reaffirmed old friendships.

A couple of crappy things happened, but on balance they are not worth much of a mention.

Pretty good for a year, I would say.

Roll on 2009..

Yes, I did cram a lot in, didn't I? I should clarify that I got a free upgrade to first class - it's a complete waste of money by the way. If you choose to go first class across the Atlantic you have far too much cash in your pocket..

WIshing you all a very happy new year too!

I'm glad so many wonderful things have happened for you over the last year- and I hope 2009 holds many more for you! smiley - hug

Never bothered flying first class myself- it didn't seem like a big enough difference to warrant the extra money, though on my second flight to London, I wouldn't have minded one of those seats that let you really lie down.

40 is a good year. Life seems to stretch out ahead forever. My own son is only a year younger. You have much to celebrate and more to be proud of.

I have travelled first class myself on a few trips. Once was because the airlines screwed my reservation up really badly and I joked and smiled about it with the lady at the ticket counter. Surprise! They called me out and sent me 1st class on a seven hour leg instead of routing me on tourist for two legs and a layover that would have taken 16 hours to Alaska...it pays to be nice to working people sometimes...

may 2009 treat you as well...

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

What *is* the secret of getting upgrades? I'm always excessively lovely to check-in staff - but zilch. Is it better just to be blatant and ask?

Beats me... Once a steward kept bringing me complimentary double Mojitas...for no reason I could see...I was way back in the cattle section...the Gods may be crazy when it comes to airline policies.

Secret to getting upgrades? Don't book online and hope that tons of your colleagues are all travelling on the same flight...
